2011 Challenger Jamboree Wrapup

Posted by Mark Saake at May 30, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

A big THANK YOU to all who volunteered this past Memorial Day Weekend to make the 7th Annual Western Regional Challenger Jamboree a huge success.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Jamboree, we host between 25-30 teams of special needs players for a weekend of baseball and fun activities.  To see why we do this, please read the following.

This is why we do this….

“I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful day today! This is my son's first year playing baseball and our first Jamboree. My son loved going to his (as he said it) "my baseball party". The goodie bags were an extra special treat for the kids, the lunch was fantastic and the best part was all the caring and super nice volunteers.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful and hard work. Our family just wanted to tell you how much we appreciate it.”

The Centers Family (Sunnyvale)

“A BIG, BIG,BIG, thank you from the people of district 7, in Sacramento. Once again a greattttt !!!!!! job you all have done.

Gina please let Dave know also what a great job once again. I'm sorry I still don't know everyone there, but please thank them all from district 7 in Sacramento. Looking forward to next year already….”

Larry Wager Sr (Sacramento)

“I wanted to thank you again for the wonderful experience we had today at the Challenger Jamboree. We are the team from Vacaville, the Challenger Giants. As you know this is Vacaville's first time in 16 years to have a Challenger league.

I as a parent can't thank you and everyone who helped and supported this enough for what a fantastic day you gave my child and all of our children. It was a great way to end all of our seasons. We are so happy Michelle Erickson made the call to find out how to start the Challenger team and that we were invited. So sad it's over, but can't wait till next year. You folks in Dublin Rock!”

Siobhan Evans (Vacaville)

“…I was fortunate to be teamed up with Michael from Modesto. He is 14 years old in the 7th grade at Glick Middle School. Michael is sight impaired. His favorite subject in school is Braille (because that is the class where they do all their learning). He has been playing Little League baseball for a year. He listens to the Giants and A's games on the radio, so for our Challenger game I tied to do my best impersonation of Kruk and Kuip and I narrated everything that was going on. He had a "beeping" ball that they placed on the batting T from him to hit (hear the ball, hit the ball).

The Challenger Jamboree was awesome.”

Dave Ott (PFLL – Buddy Volunteer)

“… This year at lunch I was sitting and watched a mom dancing to some funky music with her wheel chair bound son and a young lady in leg braces. Actually the whole table had moms and sons and daughters dancing together. It made me so thankful for all the blessings I have received in my lifetime and so proud to be a part of your event each year.

I look forward to next year and now that I am retired if I can be of further assistance to this event or Dist 57 all you have to do is ask.”

Wayne Richardson (Umpire – 2 World Series)

“Please accept my heartfelt thanks for a WONDERFUL event. I am always blown away by your cheerfulness, army of volunteers, and awesome gifts. The weather gods always bless the event with good weather, too. I know you spend countless hours making this a memorable event for everyone. We had a very helpful Buddy, Jennifer, but I don't know her last name. She looked like a young high school student or older middle school student. She took care of William Centers as he was our youngest player. We played the afternoon game under the Clock Tower. If you find Jennifer, please thank her for me and extend my thanks to all your other committee members.”

Amy Jasper (Manager, Sunnyvale LL Challenger Rockies)
