PREP SOFTBALL: Hynes, Torrey push win streak to eight

Pitcher's 6-hitter keeps Falcons perfect in Avo

CARMEL VALLEY -- It must seem like a recurring nightmare by now for the Escondido High softball team. For the second time this season, there wasn't a hitter, a pinch-hitter, or even a pinch to wake up the Cougars' sleeping bats against a Torrey Pines pitcher.

Falcons starter Lauren Hynes kept her unbeaten record intact Thursday, allowing six hits in her second complete-game shutout of the season as Torrey Pines beat Escondido 3-0 for its eighth straight victory.

Five of the Cougars' hits against Hynes (6-0) were singles, and Chloe Harmon's double was only the second extra-base Hynes has allowed in 52 2/3 innings this season. Harmon and teammate Simonne Call had two hits apiece.

But for the most part, the Cougars (12-13, 2-4 Avocado League) hit pop ups.

Kristen Filicia scored the first run of the game for the Falcons (20-4-2, 6-0) in the first inning to break the school record for runs scored in the season.

"It feels good. It will be nice to be remembered after I graduate," said Filicia, who has scored 32 runs this season.

The victory kept the Falcons two games ahead of second-place San Pasqual in the league standings with four games to play. Escondido, meanwhile, has struggled in its second season since moving from the Valley League.

"We've shown flashes of brilliance and large spurts of mediocrity," Escondido coach Cary Weiler said of the season.

Torrey Pines on the other hand, is showing flashes of mediocrity and large spurts of brilliance.

"We've beaten (Escondido) six times in a row," Torrey Pines coach Jon Moore said. "And telling you the truth, I have no idea how we've done that."

That number is now seven.
