September 21, 2001 To all members of the Southern Tier Hockey Association: It is with great regret that the STHA Board of Directors at this time must notify the membership that the 2001-2002 STHA hockey season is being officially put "on hold" as of Thursday September 27, 2001. "On hold" means for all of us: the Polar Cap ice surface is no longer available to the STHA. Please be assured though, the season will begin as soon as there is ice elsewhere, elsewhere being Grippen Park and the Arena, along with other alternatives currently being investigated by the STHA Board. To shorten the delay we are asking Broome County to lay ice at the Arena and Grippen Park, earlier than scheduled. We will aggressively look into the rights of this organization and keep all of you, the loyal membership of the STHA, informed as to the status of this situation. The reason for this hold on our season is due to the management at the Polar Cap, namely Bob Bruhn, breaching the terms of the ice contract that Mr. Bruhn, as representative for the Polar Cap, and STHA President, Randy Warner discussed and signed. It is Mr. Bruhn's intention to receive monies that were not allocated to him in this signed contract. The STHA Board of Directors stands firm when it comes to the funds of our membership and we have collectively come to the decision that we will not compromise the finances of the families in our organization only to appease Mr. Bruhn. Recently, Mr. Bruhn, manager of the Polar Cap, proposed what the STHA Board felt was an "unfair" payment arrangement (a 1/2 season pre-pay). We already held a signed agreement that states we would pay as we did in previous years (on a monthly pre-pay basis). Mr. Bruhn has informed us that, as of Sept. 27th the STHA will no longer be able to rent ice from the Polar Cap, because we refuse to change our previous agreement. These circumstances come without warning and will not be taken lightly by the STHA Board or, hopefully, the membership. It has always been the intention of the STHA to have and keep a good working relationship with the Polar Cap management. Unfortunately he does not appear to have the same regard for us and appears to not value the business we have given him throughout the years. The STHA Board of Directors will be working diligently to find a remedy that is good for our membership and the many children involved in our organization. We will stand firm to protect the STHA and the membership. We are asking in return that the membership remain patient and supportive of the STHA Board of Directors. If you have any questions please contact one of the Directors. Our names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses can be found on the web site (www.eteamz.com/stha/). Thank you. The STHA Board of Directors
