Silver Lake Lacrosse is Growing

Posted by Heather Webb on May 04 2019 at 05:00PM PDT

Dear SLFA parent;

You may be aware that Silver Lake Football Association is adding lacrosse as another sport for our fine young athletes.  In spring 2008, Silver Lake fielded a very competitive 3rd and 4th grade team in the Boys Youth Lacrosse of Washington North Division.  The Silver Lake Board and I want to expand, bringing lacrosse to grades 5th,6th,7th, 8th, and high school players as well.  Four divisions of play 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th and HS.

Why should your football player play lacrosse?  There are many reasons.  I have had parents come to me amazed at the improved hand eye coordination their young players developed through the stick handling skills. I have seen players’ footwork and speed improve because it is necessary they stay on their toes. With all the running, your football player will have improved endurance.  As a former football and baseball player, I thought I was in shape until I dropped my mitt and took up lacrosse instead.  More than anything, the sport is fun to play.

I can hear it now, “Lacrosse is a spring sport!!  It’s too early to be thinking about that right now.”  Normally I would agree with you.  I haven’t even sat down to watch a football game yet and I am already thinking about notifying the leagues that we intend to participate.  We have to let the leagues know by mid October.  “But Stan, it’s Labor Day; October is a month away.” Yes it is.  But I want to be sure Silver Lake will field teams before we spend the money.   I need to know who is interested, who is on the fence and who will not leave baseball no matter what.

You can respond by replying to this email or you can call me at 425-385-3840.  I urge you to contact me if you have any questions regarding Lacrosse and/or my qualifications.   For general lacrosse information you can go to WWW.WALAX.COM , the NW’s lacrosse site, or WWW.LACROSSE.ORG , the US Lacrosse website.

Some Frequently Asked Questions:

1.       What about girls?  We would like nothing more than to see girls’ lacrosse right next to boys’ lacrosse.  But if girls do not show in numbers required to have a team, I will suggest they may want to play on the boys’ teams. I have witnessed many young ladies perform rather well on boys’ teams.

2.       What is lacrosse?  The oldest sport on the North American continent.  According to their history, most- not all- Native American tribes played some sort of lacrosse from the Mohawks of NY all the way down to the Apaches of the SW.  Lacrosse is the Canadian national sport.

3.       Can you name famous lacrosse players?  Football fans may have heard of a running back named Jim Brown.   According to those who watch him play football and lacrosse, Jim was a better lacrosse player than a football player.  He is a member of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame as well as the Football Hall of Fame.
