Pitching, Base Running Key Yanks Over Royals

Posted by Jim Morrison at May 30, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Stellar pitching and alert base running carried the Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the first-place Royals Saturday. Danny DeSmit struck out 13 and yielded only four hits to pick up the win. Devon Donis struck out the Royals' cleanup hitter with the bases loaded to get the final out.

The Bombers broke on top and stayed there with two runs in the first inning. Paul Mahoney walked, then was forced on a grounder by Andrew Livingston. Livingston was out on Devon Donis's hard shot to first. With two outs, the Yankees worked some magic.

Danny DeSmit singled to center, sending Donis to third base. Donis scored on a wild pitch when the pitcher failed to cover home. DeSmit reached third on Matthew Baswell's single and scored on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, the Yankees added two more runs. Donis got his first walk of the season with one out. DeSmit singled to right center. Then each scored on wild pitches.

The Yankees had four hits, including two by DeSmit, one by Baswell and one by Joe Morrison.

DeSmit made a diving catch of a pop in the third inning for the third out while Antonio Howard went back to snare a short fly at second base in the key sixth inning. The Yankees have beaten the first-place Royals two out of three this season.

Dixon, Big Inning Power Yanks

Posted by Jim Morrison at May 27, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Ryan Dixon was the star on the mound and at the plate as the Yankees defeated the Nationals 8-5 Monday night. Dixon was aided by final inning heroics from Alex Duvall, who caught a fly to left, and Dakota Combs, who came in to get the final two outs.

The Bombers scored all their runs in a marathon 68-pitch third inning that featured a dozen batters, five hits, and four walks. Jack Broach opened the frame with a single and raced to second on a wild pitch before Ryan Dixon singled, scoring him.

Danny DeSmit and Matthew Baswell walked to load the bases before Joe Morrison chopped a full-count pitch to shortstop and beat the throw to first base, scoring a run. Dakota Combs walked to force in a run before the inning's first out. After a force for the second out, Antonio Howard walked to score a run. Jack singled again before Ryan Dixon cleared the bases with a ringing triple into the right-center field gap.

Dixon aurrendered a couple of hits and there were a couple of miscues behind him to score three in the first inning, but he came back to strike out two batters with the bases loaded to get out of the jam. For the game, he whiffed five.

Combs came in with a runner on base in the fifth and final inning. Duvall caught a high fly to left for the second out before Dakota struck out a batter with a full count to end the game.

Bombers Break Out, Blast O's

Posted by Jim Morrison at May 16, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Bombers broke out of their collective slump with a vengeance on Saturday, banging out 15 hits against the Orioles while cruising to an 11-9 win.

Jack Broach, Danny DeSmit and Matthew Baswell each had three hits while Joe Morrison contributed a pair of singles.

The Yankees scored in every frame. DeSmit worked into the sixth inning, striking out nine.

Broach started the scoring for the Yankees in the first with a sling before scoring on Devon Donis's ground out. In the second inning, Matthew Baswell drilled a triple down the left field line, then scored on Morrison's grounder. After Charlie Doyle's ground ball forced Morrison at second, Dakota Combs and Antonio Howard each walked, loading the bases. Broach's double scored two and the Yanks were on their way.

In the third inning, DeSmit singled then went to third base on Baswell's single. He scored on Morrison's soft liner to center. Combs's single scored Baswell with the inning's second run.

The Bombers raced across the plate four times in the fourth inning. Broach singled before Dixon doubled deep to right center field. Donis doubled to score a second run before DeSmit and Baswell each singled in a run.

Antonio Howard's perfect bunt single ignited the final rally in the fifth inning. He raced to second and then third base on passed balls before scoring on DeSmit's single.

On the mound, DeSmit unveiled a change up and yielded just three hits.

Foiled by offspeed pitches much of the game, the Yankees scored two in the initial frame and rode a complete-game two-hitter by Danny DeSmit to a 2-0 win over the Mets. DeSmit needed just 73 pitches and struck out nine.

The Mets never got a runner beyond second base.

After Jack Broach drilled a fly ball straight to the center fielder to open the game, Ryan Dixon started the Bombers with a walk in the first inning. Devon Donis grounded a ball and was safe at first. With two runners on, DeSmit flared a ball to right field scoring both runners.

The Yankees threatened in the second inning, loading the bases, then again in the sixth inning, loading the bases, but were unable to come up with an RBI
