Red Sox Come Back to Knock Off Undefeated Athletics!

Posted by Doug Richter on May 23 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The last time these two teams met, the end result was a 7-6 game that both teams could have won, but the Athletics prevailed.  But on Saturday, the Red Sox pulled off a huge come from behind victory and gave the Athletics their first loss of the season.

The game started like it might be "all-Athletics" as they put 5 runs on the board in the first inning.  But the Red Sox put together consistent hitting a solid defense over the next three innings to take a 9-5 lead going into the 5th inning.  Hitting was solid for the third game in a row, so the Sox were able to score in each at-bat.

But the Athletics are an incredibly talented team, and it showed again in the 6th inning as they put 5 more runs on the scoreboard to take a 10-9 lead with only our last at bat to lean on.

Sam got things started in the 6th with an infield hit.  Then David followed it up with another hit that caused a hurried throw, resulting in an overthrow of first.  Both David and Sam moved up one base, giving us runners on Second and Third with no outs.  That brought Connor to the plate.  On the first pitch, Connor launched a deep fly ball to left-center field, clearing both outfielders and scoring both runners, giving the Red Sox a Walk-Off victory over an incredible Athletics squad.

These two teams will undoubtedly meet again in the playoffs, making for quite a rivalry in the weeks to come.  Next up for the Sox:  Nationals on Friday night, 5:30.
