Staff report • December 5, 2010, 8:10 pm

Elmira Free Academy senior defender Nick Lian was named to the New York All-State Soccer team for the 2010 season.

Lian, who helped the Blue Devils to a Section IV Class A Championship this year, was also named to the STAC All-Conference team.

The four-year starter had previously made STAC West All-Division teams during his sophomore and junior seasons.

During his career, Lian also helped the Blue Devils earn STAC West Division titles in 2007 and 2008 and an overall STAC Conference championship in 2008. EFA finished the 2010 season ranked 16th in New York state.

Lian will attend Penn State University next fall.

During the month of October, Alex Varkatzas tallied 9 goals and 5 assists to lead the Elmira Free Academy Blue Devils varsity soccer team to a 6-0 record, a #1 Seed in the NYS, Section IV, Class "A" Tournament, and a NYS, Section IV,  Class "A" Championship.  Although he acknowledges it couldn't have done it by himself, it's hard to deny that it would be difficult for the team to do without his goals as well.

During the 2010 season Varkatzas was able to set the following records as a sophomore (** - since STAC merger):

     -Goals in a Season (22) **

     -Assists in a Single Game (3 vs. Odessa-Montour) **

     -Points in a Season (52) **

Alex also owns the following EFA records (** - since STAC merger):

-Goals in a Single Game (4 vs. Elmira Southside) **

-Points in a Single Game (8 vs. Elmira Southside) **

Congratulations Alex for your continuted success in the Elmira Free Academy program!!

EFA Boys Continue Success Into New Decade!!

Posted by Derek Hamilton at Nov 18, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

After four consecutive successful seasons to round out the 2000's, the EFA Boys Varsity Soccer team has started the 2010's on the right foot.

The last FIVE seasons of EFA Soccer have seen the Blue Devils post an overall record of 50 wins, 34 losses, and 9 draws for an average season of 10-6-2 against not only some of the toughest competition in the state, but mostly against schools twice thier enrollment.  During that span, the Blue Devils have FIVE major championships including:

-First TWO outright STAC West Championships in program history

-First Overall STAC Conference Championship in program history

-FIVE consecutive New York State, Section IV, Class "A" #1 seeds

-TWO New York State, Section IV, Class "A" Championships.

EFA has finished the season ranked in New York State in THREE of those FIVE seasons and peaked at #5 in the state in 2007.  The program has seen 17 EFA players play in the STAC Senior Showcase game, 17 players named to the STAC West All-Division team, 8 players named to the STAC All-Conference team, and 6 players named to the NYS Large-school All-State team.

The program's success can be attributed to the countless hours players nad coaches have put in both in and out of season.  It has been that dedication that has allowed the Elmira Free Academy Blye Devils the opportunity to maintain thier high level of play and continue thier success regardless of who graduates.

Incredible job gentlemen!!  Keep the EFA tradition alive!!
