2011 Season

Posted by John Hughes at Mar 30, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Feile Cluiche Corr 2011August Bank Holiday Weekend. Limekiln took part in the full programe of games over the weekend. We gave our young players the opportunity of playing some extra games by entering 3 teams in  the under 14 Mixed section on the Monday. The Heath proved to be too strong, managing top spot in all age groups. Our under15 Boys had the measure of them in the premlinaries and but for a little bad luck and the odd close call not going their way could possibly have also beaten them in the Final.

“Club wise, in the New Year (2011) we hope to see action on our Dressing Rooms, increased support for our Lotto and more players taking part at all levels. We call on our Senior Men to make a special effort to bring the Senior Men’s All Ireland trophy to Limekiln for the 1st. time, come on Lads,” to quote from the last years report.  Fingers crossed, there seems to be a move from S.D.C.C. to initiate work on the Dressing Rooms. Congratulations to our Senior Men who achieved their goal and became All Ireland Champions. This was a 1st. for our Club after over 30 years of trying, well done Lads. Not a bad return on a wish list. The Senior Men also captured the " James O'Connor Cup", when they paid a visit in early June, to Naomh Mhicil's fine facility in Moneymore Co. Derry, beating the host team in an exciting Final.

We entered all competitions open to us, except for the Gary Kelly Cup, from which our Senior Ladies withdrew late on.  In Community Games our under13 Boys, under15 Girls & Boys won the Dublin section. The u/15 Boys & Girls went on to lose to Wexford in the Leinster semi-finals. At Feile, held in Clara Co. Offaly on August Bank Holiday weekend we had teams in all sections, including 3 teams in the under14 Mixed. The under 13 Boys won their Novice Plate. The under 15 Boys & 16 Mixed, having won all their preliminary matches, were both unlucky, collecting Silver Medals, with some close calls not going their way, they lost by 1 run to the Heath in the Finals.

At All Ireland Level the Minor Men, Women & Mixed took Silver, the Mixed losing by 1 run, again to the Heath. The Senior Ladies & Senior Mixed, having topped their groups in the preliminaries, lost in the Semi-Finals. The Mixed went down by 4 to Ballon and the Ladies by 1 to Bagenalstown. The Senior Men took Gold in an epic match against the Heath. Having gone 9 runs down in the 1st. innings, the mighty men from Limekiln made a spirited fight back to level the score at 18 runs each after the regulation 7 innings. Indeed, but for a mix up with the batting order of the Heath team, requiring Limekiln to make 4 outs in the 7th. Innings, the game could have been done and dusted. In the 8th.The Heath batting first scored 3, Limekiln came up with 4. The 9th, started with the first 4 batters scoring for the Heath, with bases loaded and no one out, Adam Riordan, pitching for Limekiln, somehow engineered 3 outs without further damage. Limekiln batting to win the match, scored with their 1st. two batters but at the cost of 2 outs. The next 2 batters got to base and then Gary Kett hit a spin off, which was played by the Heath catcher, knocking the ball out of play and allowing the 3 runners to score. Final score Limekiln 27 Heath 25. The Men who made history for our Club were, Adam Riordan (pitcher), Darren Goode (left outfield), Eddie Healy( short stop), Christopher Hughes (1st. base), Dashmir Hoaxha (3rd. Base), Michael O’Connell (2nd base), Gary Kett (right outfield), John Nolan ( right outfield), Shane Murtagh ( catcher), David Ryan, out through injury, did a stand out job as coach on the day. Mention must be made of James Dillon, who though missing for the final, had helped to get the team there.

Limekiln Challenge Cup, which usually signals the end of our season, was held on 11/9/2011. ( This year we have some outstanding Finals at Leinster underage level, which look like being postponed until the spring of 20012). The weather was kind to us again this year with the rain holding off. Because of a clash with other fixtures our numbers were slightly down on last year. Notwithstanding four teams fielded. After a bout of very close first round games the Pro-Team and Triple-D met in the final. The final, like most of the matches on the day, proved to be a close and exciting affair. With the 5 innings completed the match was drawn at 6 runs apiece. Two extra innings were played, after which the Pro-Team came out on top with a score of 10 to 9. Lynsey Healy, showing form not seen for a while and Darren Goode with an excellent fielding performance were tops for the winners. Dylan Clerkin was outstanding for Triple-D, With a 100% at bat (4 runs) making him the top scorer in the final. Team list Triple-D :-:Yvonne Healy, Kelly Mc.Gee, Darryl Dolan, Shane Murtagh, Shauna O’Reilly, Dylan Clerkin, Molly Meade, Dano Costello and Adam McGarry. Pro-Team :-; Lynsey Healy, Dar Goode, Niamh Haverty, John Nolan, Mick O’Connell,Elaine Costello, Adam Riordan, Gary Kett (captain) and Shannon Kelly. Special mention for Darryl Dolan from Erin Eagles, who had an outstanding series of games with Triple-D, thank you Darryl. Thank you to Liam & Eddie who kept us fed & watered and to everyone who helped to make the day a success, especially the players.

Home Run  Compettition :-: Juniors- Anne Meegan.  Seniors- Dylan Clerkin.

Player of the Year :-:  As usual it was most difficult to make this call, in the end James Dillon got the nod, congratulations to James and as always to everyone who took to the Diamond for Enjoyment throughout the past year. Hope to see you all, plus extras playing next year.

All Stars Awards 2011:-:  Congratulations to all 24 recipients for 2011, especially the 7 from Limekiln. Christine Kelly, Michael O’Connell, Shane Murtagh, Eddie Healy, Christopher Hughes, Darren Goode & Gary Kett.

2010 Season

Posted by John Hughes at Dec 7, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Our 2010 playing season came to a close with the very successful and enjoyable day in Tymon Park on 26/09/2010. Congratulations to all who took part and well done to the winners, the Pro-Team, led by Christine Kelly, who overcame the Untouchables by 4 runs to 2 in a Final that was an exhibition of Rounders at its best. Winners in the Home Run competitions, Juniors:-: James Dillon, Seniors :-: Darren Goode.

For only the second time in many years we failed to field in all competitions open to us, missing out on the Gary Kelly cup in Derry and a charity blitz in Carlow.

Throughout the season there were many outstanding achievements. Top of the list stands the winning of the under 14 Mixed in Feile and the under 15 boys reaching the All Ireland Community Games final, defeating both the Heath and the might of Wexford in the Leinster finals, (this with only 6 players on the day). The Senior Mixed retained the GAA Commemorative Trophy in Ballon, although having to field with a greatly depleted team, well done to those who stepped up to the plate on the day.

Individually, we had Kayleigh Kavanagh, who was without doubt the most improved player within the club, Darren Goode who turned in a Man of the Series performance on Challenge Cup day. There were many others, too numerous to mention, who worked hard both on and off the field, ensuring that our club survived a most difficult year. The No. 1 spot must go to Elaine Costello, who pitched a record breaking full Championship season without giving up a single walk, deservedly winning an All Star award in the process. Elaine's award was disappointingly the only one bestowed to our players, despite many fine performances by others throughout the Championship.

Financially, like most clubs in these difficult times we are finding it hard to make ends meet. We are grateful for all help and support received in the past and look forward to continued and increased support into the future. Anyone wishing to offer sponsorship, or support, in buying or selling our weekly Lotto tickets, please contact any club or committee member.

Again this year as in many of the recent past, it is hugely disappointing, despite funding having been granted a number of years back and countless promises by S.D.C.C. no progress has been made with regard to the building of our dressing room facilities.

Club wise, in the New Year we hope to see action on our Dressing Rooms, increased support for our Lotto and more players taking part at all levels. We call on our Senior Men to make a special effort to bring the  Men's trophy to Limekiln for the 1st. time, come on Lads.

End of Season-- Limekiln Challenge Cup,

Posted by John Hughes at Oct 24, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Our playing season finished in glorious sunshine on a beautiful September day.(26/9/2010). We congratulate and thank all who took part in making it such a successful and enjoyable one. Hugely disappointing was the lack of support from other clubs, but the large turnout of local players more than compensated.

The five teams who took the diamond seeking to get their hands on the Limekiln Cup, were “ The Misfits”, captained by the vociferous and as always entertaining Micko .

“The Red Devils” led by Anita who had an outstanding series as catcher. Anita’s team also introduced Gael, to Rounders, who proved to be, by far, the best "Rookie" on the day.

“The Minor Ts”, championed by Christopher, who trying his hand at pitching for the first time, performed well, as did his team.

“The Untouchables”, with Shane at the helm, made it to the final, needing a big hit from Mick O’ Connell bringing home two runners with two out, to scrape past the Red Devils by the smallest of margins.

“The Pro-Team” These were obvious favourites to win outright from the start of competition, and with Christine as their leader duly obliged.

The final between the Pro –Team and the Untouchables gave an exhibition of all that is good in Rounders and would have been worthy of any Final. The fielding was of an especially high standard. David Whitson for the winning team whose athletic blocking and fast and accurate throwing to Ami Donnelly on 1st. base was top notch. Shane Murtagh, with a brilliant catch, doubled to Christine Kelly on 3rd. for two outs & two other catches to his credit showed his class as a first rate back stop. The difference between the two teams was the slight edge in batting that the winners held over their opposition. This was illustrated when Eddie Healy found a gap to drive the sliothar through and bring home two runners. This in effect was the winning of the game with the final score being 4 runs to 2. Eddie also gave a top class fielding exhibition with 3 catches to his name.

David Ryan, Mick O’Connell and Kelly McGee put in excellent performances for the runners up. My “ Man of the Match”, on the same team, with 4 catches a double and an assist, was Darren Goode, just ahead of David Whitson and other very close candidates.  Special mention for Kayleigh Kavanagh, also playing for the Untouchables, who is without doubt the most improved young player within the club.  It would be remiss of me to finish this report without commenting on a remarkable season by Elaine Costello, who after 10 games of flawless pitching, gave her first walk on in her last game while pitching for the Misfits against the Red Devils.

It would take too much time and space to thank everyone involved in what was a most enjoyable day. However the referees and those who kept us well refreshed with burgers etc. deserve a “ gura Mile Maith Agaibh”from us all.

Match Results :-: Misfits (Micko)14- Minor T. (Chris) 9.    Untouchables (Shane) 10- Red Devils (Anita) 9

Pro –Team(Christine)30- Minor T-4.   Untouchables -12  Misfits-4.    Red Devils-6  Misfits- 3.   Pro-Team-4 Misfits-2.

Pro-Team-10 Red Devils-5.    Untouchables-7  Minor T- 3.    Final :-: Pro-Team – 4  Untouchables- 2.

Home Run Competition Winners:-:    Juniors:-: James Dillon.    Seniors :-: Darren  Goode.

Senior Games 2010

Posted by John Hughes at Jul 7, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Our Senior Ladies have been very busy of late, having played 5 games in the last 2 weeks.

Results :-: Limekiln 12 Glin Barntown 4.       Limekiln 6 St. Claire's 6.                          Limekiln 10 Bagenalstown 8.    Limekiln 8 Erne Eagles 8.  Limekiln 10 The Heath 5

The outstanding statistic of the Ladies games is the fact that after 5 games, pitcher Elaine Costello has yet to concede a walk. Both she and Christine Kelly at left out field, have given top class performances to date.

In the Senior Mixed we were unlucky to lose 12- 10 to the Heath and done well to reverse the result 12-10 in the Senior Men.

Next series of games are on 18/7/2010 against Ballon,  in Tymon North Park.

Under 15 Boys Leinster Community Games Champions 2010 .                               These young players created a little bit of history for our club, being our 1st. boys team to reach the All Ireland Community Games Finals. They displayed great commitment, energy and not a little skill in firstly overcoming a very good Heath team in the Leinster semi-final. Then in the final against the might of Wexford, having fought back to gain a 20-20 draw after 5 innings, went on to win 6-2 in the extra inning. What was most remarkable about these results was the fact that they were achieved playing with just six players. Well done and congratulations boys, you did us all proud.
