Summer Running Club - Common Sense Guidelines - CLICK HERE

Posted by Mike Davis on May 20 2016 at 05:00PM PDT
Some common sense stuff for running this summer, that we need to remind ourselves about occasionally.  This is for new and veteran runners - follow these important rules and you'll make it to the start of the season just fine!

1.  Run with a buddy whenever possible - not only is it easier for you to be seen by cars when you are with another runner... it is much easier to get the miles in when you are chatting away and not simply focused on "how great this feels"!

2. Run off road as much as possible.  We have lots of trails around Danville, and of course, bike lanes and the bike path.  Running on dirt is much better for your legs.  Asphalt is better than concrete - avoid prolonged runs on concrete as much as possible.  Head into the hills by Macedo Ranch for some great trails!

3.  If you are on the roads, and you will be, run against the flow of traffic.  Face traffic.  You have a better sense of security when you can see what the cars are doing - coming at you - than if they are passing you blindly.  Run against the flow.  However, remember this important fact:  when you are on the left side of the road, running against the flow, and a car approaches from your left side and is turning right.... they will not look your direction before turning.  When you are in a car, notice this yourself.  So...  if a car pulls in the road in front of you, turning right (across you)...DO NOT cut in front of the car without establishing eye contact with the driver.  When in doubt, circle behind the car and keep going.   2013 update. I've changed my thinking on this subject.  It's safest to run WITH the flow of traffic.  Granted, when you oppose traffic you do see cars coming at you, but there are too many examples of cross traffic NOT seeing you, that actually makes it safer to run with the flow of traffic.

4.  Wear bright colors.  At night, wear white and some reflective material.  I once trained with a guy who always wore black running gear, even at night.  Some sort of suicidal ninja runner.  Don't do that.

5.  Carry an ID strap, or some sort of ID.  Even writing your name and phone # in Sharpie Marker on the sides of your shoes is a great idea.  Carry a quarter for a phone call if needed.

6.  Tell somebody when you leave, the route you plan to take, and roughly when you plan on returning.  If you roll an ankle 4 miles from home, you'll appreciate the fact that your parents  knew what route your were running and can come find you.

7.  and this one is tough... NO ear-buds while out on the streets!  Cars weigh 3000 lbs or more.  You weigh...less.  You need all your senses while you are running, especially your hearing.  Sing a song in your head, but don't plug your ears with headphones.  Please!

Have fun,  be safe, and GET IN THOSE MILES!
