Comets Red 3-0 in Pool Play at Garden City Classic
(KB - 06/24/05) The Comets Red continued to prepare for AAU 16U Nationals by winning Pool D at the Garden City Roundball Classic in Augusta, GA this weekend. Pools for this tourney are listed below:
A number of these teams also competed at the SC 76ers' tourney this past April. The Red team won that tourney, but are short two players in Augusta. Briyanna Blair is attending the USF high school team camp with Boone and Tierra Brown is attending to family business. Tierra will play on Sunday, though. Alexa Deluzio has recovered from an injury that sidelined her in Columbia. The Comets are using this tournament and the UCF Brawl in the Swamp next weekend to prepare for 16U nationals at Disney in mid-July.
It should be noted that although these are all good teams, none of them finished as a Sweet 16 team at 2004 15U AAU Nationals. Most of these are Nike sponsored teams. The Comets will face true AAU competition at Disney, where the incumbents always seem to repeat.
The Red team is undefeated so far in Augusta, but they have been tested. The Alabama Roadrunners led the Red team for most of the game before the Comets stormed back and sent the game into overtime on Friday night. The Comets eventually won, 71-61. The Comets beat the SC 76ers 58-41 on Saturday morning and they squeaked by GA Hoopsters I, 49-47, on Saturday afternoon. The Red team will have a bye in the quarterfinals on Sunday after their projected opponent, the All-Ohio Blazers, elected to return home rather than stick around for bracket play.
The Comets Blue team is also competing here. Their pool schedule looks like this:
2005 Girls 15U Super Schedule
The Blue team has not fared as well as the Red team, losing their opening game, 56-48, to the GA Nikes and falling to the SC 76ers, 52-37, in the Saturday afternoon game. The Blue team is preparing for AAU 15U D2 Nationals, also at Disney.
Against the GA Nikes, the Blue team fell behind 22-7 before coming back to take a 3 point halftime lead. In the second half the Blue team went cold and they ended up losing by eight.
In their final game on Saturday, the Blue team squared off against the Arkansas Rebels. Using their press effectively, the Blue team jumped out to a 40-23 lead. But then, once again, they went cold. The girls chose to shoot jumpers as the Rebels made their comeback. But the shots weren't falling. Arkansas rebounded and won, 49-46.
This loss set the Blue team up for a Sunday morning matchup against the Charlotte Fire, who won Pool B.
