Comets Off to Essence Tourney

Posted by Kurt Coleman on Mar 23 2006 at 04:00PM PST

(KB - 03/24/06) The Orlando Comets are gearing up for their first major test of 2006. The Essence Girls Basketball Classic will bring together the top travel teams from Florida and Southern Georgia.

The Comets will send three travel teams to this event. The Blue team and the Red team will compete in the 16U/17U division. A third Comets team, the Comets Fusion, will compete in the 15U division.

The Comets Red team won this tournament last year as a 15U team. This year the Comets are coming off a very successful high school season. But three weeks of practice for the AAU season have been fitful at best. Several players are currently running track for their high schools. Spring Break vacations robbed several players of practice time. The Comets are running off energy borrowed from last year.

But several Comets rivals are slated to attend the Essence Event. DEBO will be there with a full contingent. DEBO has four teams competing in the 16U/17U division alone. The Premiere Jags and the Hollywood Eagles will be there. Nik Nikic's RDV Sports Stars will be in attendance. Several top Georgia teams are coming. This tournament has EVERYBODY.

The Essence tournament is outside the NCAA viewing period, which means that college scouts won't be in attendance. This tournament will be purely for the competition.

The Red team opens against the SASA Jags on Friday at 8:25 p.m. at Tully gym. The Blue team's first game will be against the Steiner Sports Comets at 12:30 on Saturday. The Comets Fusion 15U will open against the Jacksonville Lady Sparks at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
