DEA Bedford out powered top seeded Wayland, 6-4 at Legacy on Sunday morning. George Wegricht and Jim McCall would lead Bedford to this important victory, each scoring two goals and assisting on another. DEA was out to prove that they are truly the #1 team in this division right from the start. Bedford would test the Wayland defenders early and often in the opening minutes and found this to be a weak link. These early attempts at the goal were scooped up by the Wayland keeper who was very good. Up until this game, opponents had only scored 6 goals on Wayland all season. But they don't have George and Jimmy. About 10 minutes into the game Jim McCall would take the ball down the left side to the goal line, turn and hit an outside of the left foot bender to the far post. The shot would beat the keeper and find the head of a diving George Wegricht to insure the shot would count. A beautiful opening goal that sent cheers up from the hometown fans. Wayland would have a few chances as they would continually send their two Brazilians on long through balls that were scooped up by the DEA defense of Mitch Green, Mark Major, Sean Kelly, Pat Walsh, and Dale Dubois. These Brazilians were talented, but DEA had their number all day. They were very selfish which made them an easy mark for the Bedford backs. In fact, Wayland's #9 did not pass the ball once. At one point, this caused a screaming match amongst the rest of the Wayland team. Anyway, John Morrison would be the next to score in the DEA frenzy. John would score his first goal of the season off of a great feed from Jim Kellogg, who was very strong in the middle and later in the net for DEA all day. Wayland would get one back as Dale and Sean would get tied up on a miscue in the back. However, George W. would put more pressure on as he would score his second of the day off a Doug Wolfe feed. This would put DEA up 3-1. Wayland would take a shot from the opening kickoff spot that would beat Eric Burger high to narrow the gap for Wayland, 3-2. Jim McCall would find the side netting as he would score moments later on a nice pass from George W. Jim McCall would break in on the Wayland defenders all day long and be a constant threat from his offensive midfield position. The half would end 4-2 and was looking very good for DEA. Wayland would turn things around in the second half as they would score on a break away early. Eric Burger would then make a great save on the Wayland striker minutes later as he would go in alone. Eric would get a foot of the ball and spoil the scoring attempt. However, Wayland would manage to knot the score at 4 a piece and it was getting a little tense for the DEA side. Jim Kellogg would hop into the net for the remainder of the game and, at the same time, the DEA offense would perk up again. This time it would be Jim McCall for his second goal of the morning off a through pass from Mitchell Green. McCall would dribble around three defenders and then beat the keeper to the far post on the turn around goal for Bedford. Moments later, Dan Roberge would finish off a Jim Pellerin feed to finish off the scoring for DEA. Roberge would blast home the ball that was bouncing in front of the Wayland net. This would put DEA up 6-4 with 15 minutes to play. DEA's defense would take over and shut out Wayland for the remainder. Jim Kellogg was forced to make a great save as he came out of the area to take the ball off the foot of the Brazilian. A Great win for DEA. Next week we are home again at 10:30 AM. This time against Weston, another one of the expansion teams that Bedford only plays once. DEA has a good shot at the title if they can maintain the attendence at games.
If you show up with 8 guys you can expect to get crushed. Nashoba sucks. It was imbarassing to loose to them. Too bad too. The first and second place teams lost. We could have been in second right behind Wayland, who we play this weekend. Thank you to the guys that did show up. Good effort. Dale showed up at the half scored a goal caused all kinds of trouble and got a yellow card and went home... I think he was frustrated. Home game this Sunday at 10:30 AM. Really important game against Wayland. Please make an effort to show up.
DEA Bedford Masters played their best match of the season so far as they shut out the Eagles of Lexington, 2-0 yesterday at Legacy. In a truly impressive show of passing and possession, Bedford totally dominated the game. If it were not for the talent of the Eagles keeper, the score could have easily been 10-0. DEA would score at about the 15 minute mark as George Wegricht would head in a cross from Jim Pellerin from the right corner. George would be a constant threat up top throughout this match. DEA's defense of David Poole, Mark Major, Sean Kelly and Dale Dubois would shut down all attempts of Lexington to get into this game. Jim McCall along with Jim Kellogg, Jim Pellerin, and Rick Plichta controlled the midfied for Bedford and put together some quality passing. The 3 Jim's and a Rick forced the Eagles to move their best player to a defensive roll. The first half would end 1-0 for DEA. The second half was more of the same. DEA working the ball out of the back field through to the Mids. Then around up to the strikers for a go at the net. George, Stan and Billy Jean would all have some good shots in the second half that were saved by the Eagles net minder. At about the 20 minute mark, however, DEA would be awarded a free kick off to the right side of the Lexington net. George W. would serve the ball into the area right onto Jim Kelloggs head. Jim's head ball would beat the keeper clean to put DEA up by two. A bit of comedy was provided midway through the half by two Lexington players that were converging on George very hard. The two Eagle players were lining George up for a sandwich. George pulled back at the last second and the two Lexington players collided hard sending both to the ground in something you normally see only in cartoons. One left with a broken nose and the other remained. The two goal cushion would be more than enough as DEA would not let down for a minute. The returning, Tod Marvel would have to make a couple saves for DEA, as he took over for Eric Burger, in the net in the second half. Final score 2-0 DEA. GREAT GAME !!!! Next week DEA travels to Nashoba looking for their next win. Bedford faced Nashoba earlier this season at home and tied 2-2. If DEA plays like they played yesterday, noone in this division can beat them. Game time is 10 AM at Forbush Field in Bolton, MA. See 'Locations' for directions.
On a cold and windy Mother's Day morning, the DEA Bedford Masters took on the Grey Goats of Westford at Legacy. DEA would have to settle for a 1-1 tie in the end as they just could not net the winning goal. It was very tough conditions with a 10 to 15 mph constant wind, a bit of rain and the temperature just barely 40 degrees. However, DEA once again took control of the game early with some good lateral ball movement. Bedford had some chances early on. Stan Wisniewski and Jim Pellerin both had good chances but missed just wide. The Westford keeper was forced to make some good saves on shots from Jim McCall and Dan Roberge. On the other end Mitch Green kept tight command of the defense shutting down the Asian attacks. It would be Westford however, that would put the first points on the board, as a long shot off the DEA keepers punt would slip into the net. DEA didn't panic as they knew they had the better squad. The half would end 1-0 for the bad guys. The second half would be all DEA. With the wind now at their backs, Bedford pinned Westford in their own end for 40 of the 45 minutes. But, again, they could not find the equallizer. DEA had at least 15 good chances to score and either the shots would sail high or wide or the keeper would reel them in. Finally, DEA would get a corner kick with about 10 minutes to play. Jim McCall would serve it into the box to Dale Dubois' head. Dale's head ball would be headed back out by a Westford defender, but right back to Dale. Dubois would volley the ball through a screen for the equallizer. In the final minutes, EVERYONE on DEA tried to win the game but the Goats keeper came up big to presearve the tie. Bedford is now unbeaten in its last four games. Next Sunday, DEA takes on the Lexington Eagles at home. The Eagles handed Bedford a loss on opening day and currently sit one spot ahead in the standings. DEA has a better squad, so this should be a great game. Game time is 10:30AM. Maybe Bruce Walsh will be kind enough to bring the balls, roster, and beer that he was intrusted in. By the way Bruce, the game starts at 10:30 so it would be nice to have the equipment by 10:15 so we can warm up and check in. Thanks to all the Mother's that came to watch the game. Happy Mother's Day.
Stan Wisniewski would net two goals to lead DEA Bedford to a 4-0 shutout of the Lynnfield Raiders yesterday in Lynnfield. Bedford showed up with an impressive crew of players for this away game and controlled the play right from the opening kickoff. Stan would get things going early as he would register his first goal at the ten minute mark from a Jim McCall cross. DEA kept up the pressure with good passing on the not so smooth field. Tony Alvanos would take net duties and he would come up huge on two very well placed Raider shots. Tony would position himself just right to make the saves that would earn DEA's first shutout of the season. DEA's next goal was an absolute blast from Jim Kellogg from about 25 yards out. Bedford was on a corner kick and the ball would come across to Dale Dubois' head. The head ball would deflect up and back to the charging Kellogg. Jim would volley a shot the hit the inside top cross bar and rip into the back of the net for DEA's 2nd goal. The half would end with this score and the rain would begin to fall again. The second half was more of the same domination by Bedford. Stan would collect his second goal of the day as the result of some good passing. Rick Plichta would make a nice outlet pass to Dan Roberge. Dan would take a touch on the ball and hit Stan up top. Wisniewski would not disappoint earning his third goal of the season. Jim McCall would round out the scoring for DEA on a Jim Pellerin feed. Jim McCall would deke a few defenders and hit side netting for Bedford's final tally. DEA looked very sharp all around in this outing. They head home for the next two games at Legacy park in Bedford. Next Sunday DEA looks for its 3rd win in a row against the Grey Goats of Westford. Game time is 10:30 AM so you can sleep in a bit. Maybe Mark Major will be up by then.
