Bedford Drops One to Billerica: 2-1

Posted by Dale Dubois at Sep 18, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Bedford came up short in their first away game of the season on Sunday as they fell to the Billerica Rovers 2-1. Playing on the small field played a big part in the defeat as DEA could not establish control of the game. Credit goes to Billerica, for what they lack in skill, they made up for in effort.

DEA got their only goal midway throught the first half as Ed Ibanez found Scott Sharby with a nice pass outside. Scott beat his defender and ripped a screamer by the Rover's keeper. This is where DEA needs to put things away and they have failed in their two losses this season. Bedford had the chance to knock in two more goals and put the game out of reach for Billerica but the could not finish up front. Billerica tied the game up with a minute left in the first half on a quick counter attack.

DEA had chances in the second half also but did not finish. Billerica would score a goal off a rebound. Steve Sarro, who did a great job to save the first shot for Bedford, would have no chance at the rebound as an uncovered Rover would tap it in.

Bedford has to do a much better job capitalizing on the opponents mistakes and scoring goals when they are given the opportunity. Luckily the division is still very much up for grabs for any team.

Look for some changes in the lineup for the next game against the Irish Village at home this Sunday at 10:30 AM.

Scott Sharby picked up his second yellow card and Ed Ibanez picked up his first. That is three 30 packs.... for next game.

Show up to play or stay home!!!

Ed Ibanez scored two quick goals to lead DEA to their first victory of the Fall season. Ed was an off season aquisition for DEA from the indoor circuit. He is turning into a key offensive weapon for Bedford. DEA was short on some defenders and these early goals were key in the long run. Nick Masci picked up a goal and an assist and Steve Sarro scored his second of the season out of the back. Captain McCall picked up two more assists for the stats and Jeff Guild rounded out the accounting with an assist of his own. Westford got one back before the half to make it 4-1. Sharby and JD had to leave at half time and Westford came back with 2 more goals. Bedford held on to win in the end, 4-3.

DEA dropped its fall opener to Danvers 3-2 on Sunday. Bedford got a rare home opener to start the fall season but wished they had started away after the result. Three fluke goals given up an some missed opportunities led to the loss for DEA. Danvers has a good team, but Bedford made them look even better.

The game would start very slow with each team getting little opportunities. Dave Crespo would have to make a couple of easy saves and Jim McCall and Jeff Guild would miss on the other end. The half seemed to fly by and the referee, Willy Mungere from DEA o-30, would blow the whistle with no score.

Danvers drew first blood early in the 2nd half as a serve into the Bedford box was not cleared. Like in slow motion, the ball fell to the feet of a Danvers striker who tapped it in for the opening score. DEA would come right back however with some great second effort by Jeff Guild. Nick Masci would feed Jeff the ball on the left side. Jeff would beat his defender and ring one off the hands of the keeper. Guilds did not give up and he charged at the rebound and beat the defender. Jeff hammered it by the keeper this time and we were all tied up at ones. Danvers would come back. Down the left side this time and a cross in front of the net. Crespo dived for the ball but could not come up with it clean and the ball redirected to the foot of a Danvers player who again just tapped it in. DEA came right back again however. This time it was Steve Sarro down the left side from a feed from Dale. Steve would turn on his defender and hit a beautiful shot over the keepers hands and into side netting. It was 2-2 and DEA wanted the win.

The win would not come to pass however, as good turned bad real fast. First, DEA failed to score on two golden opportunities in front of the Danvers net. Then, with a minute to play, Danvers would hit a cross in from the right side. Mitch Green attempted to head the ball out of play but instead found the upper corner of the DEA net. A great shot that fooled everyone, just at the wrong end. Details, details..... This would end the game as the time would tick out. Very disappointing finish, but lets move on.

DEA would win the 3rd half with some company from some classy guys from the Danvers side. Some classic quotes were reviewed. Like one from Danvers philosopher, Dermot Murray, when yelling at one of his own player to get him to attack one of the DEA defenders. He said, "For God's sakes, attack him man!!! Can't you see, he is practically DEAD!!" Them is true fighting words... and very very funny.... Classic humor.

DEA has Labor Day weekend off. Next game is the following Sunday at home again against the Westford Grey Goats. This should be a good team as their roster has a lot of long time rivals from he Westford O-30 team on it. Game time is 10:30 AM as usual.

The field is located in Progin Park in Lancaster, MA. These are turf fields so wear appropriate cleats or turf shoes.

GO DEA !!!

DEA Bedford traveled to Natick with a mission and followed it to the letter, coming home with a 3-1 victory and another trip to the Finals next Sunday in Lancaster, MA. DEA was edged out of the division championship by the Irish Village so they would enter the semi-finals in second position and having to travel to Natick. Natick was the southern division champions and a look at their record showed that they were a goal scoring team, similar to Bedford. So the pregame chatter was all about how DEA had to come out and score quick and often. After a couple of last minute lineup adjustments the game was on. The game started out contrary to DEA game plan at first. Natick seemed to be the one controlling the possession of the ball. It became clear that their "go to guy" was their tall and quick striker, Hassan Smahi. After a few attempts at the DEA net, that were controlled nicely by John Morin in the DEA net for the duration, Rob Easton would start to take Mr. Smahi out of his game. It became clear to Bedford that Natick was strong up the middle but their flanks were vulnerable. This is where things turned around. John Valickus, DEA's center mid, found David Crespo on the right side open. David would receive the pass and head toward the right side of the goal. Just before Crespo was about to cross the ball, the Natick defender knocked him off the ball to the turf. A whistle would blow the foul and it was just inside the area. The result would be a PK. DEA's PK specialist and Captain, Jim McCall would step to the strip and place the ball into the left corner and DEA was up 1-0. This seemed to rattle the Natick team, who were clearly not used to playing behind in the score. Ten minutes later it would be Crespo once again attacking the Natick right side. This time Mitch Green would find Crespo with a great pass. David would take a touch on the ball and crank a low hard shot into the left side netting. Bedford was up 2-0 and it was only 20 minutes into the game. Would it be to early? Would DEA try to sit on this lead? Not yet. DEA kept pounding away with quick counter attacks down the outside of the field. John Valickus would have a couple of good chances, but the ball would just miss wide. The defense of Rob Easton and Dale Dubois in the middle with Mitch and Sean outside would totally shut down the Natick attackers. DEA would go into the half with a comfortable 2-0 lead. Natick would start the second half with more urgency. The Bedford defense and Johnny Morin would not yield. This would start some open discouragement amongst the Natick players as they pleaded for passing. At about midway through the half, DEA started to sit on their lead and only attack when able. Bedford only had two subs and the fatigue was showing a bit. Natick finally got on the board at the 70th minute mark on a nice cross and one timer. Now Natick would seriously pressure for the next ten minutes for the equalizer. They would get there chance too, as a misplayed ball in the back would land at the feet of a Natick striker, only 3 feet from an open net. His tap in would go wide left and the score would remain 2-1. "Chunglo" was ringing out around the DEA side and it seemed like there were goal kicks after goal kicks as DEA could not get the ball out of their end. Finally, with 5 minutes to play, Robbie would find Jim McCall alone. Jim would take the Easton pass and head towards the Natick net. The Natick defenders would all collapse around McCall. Jim would hold the ball until he found John Valicus with a nice pass back. John would draw a defender and pass the ball to Jeff Guild on the left. With all the action in the middle, Jeff had time and ripped a shot that would ring off the upper bar and back into the Net. This would secure the victory for Bedford 3-1. DEA would kill the clock and celebrate a well played victory by all. A very good game with another classy opponent. DEA now takes on the Hopkington Raiders in the finals. Hopkington beat the Irish Village 2-1 in their semifinal match. DEA was hoping to get another shot at the Village people as they were confident that Bedford was a superior team. DEA looks forward to the challenge of another unknown opponent. Game time is yet to be determined. The field is a turf field located in Lancaster, MA. See locations for directions. GO DEA....
