Falcons Fall To Cobras In Bottom Of Ninth

Posted by Ray Evans on Apr 22 2015 at 05:00PM PDT

The Falcons played right with the Cobras from Park Vista, who are ranked #2 in the country, until an error in the bottom of the 9th let the Cobras win 2-1.

Junior Dylan O'Connell started on the hill and kept the Cobras in check for 3 2/3 innings. O'Connell only gave up 3 hits, but walked 4 while striking out 3 in his outing. Sophomore Jeremy Cook came on to pitch 2 1/3 innings to get through the 6th inning. Cook did a great job as he only gave up 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3. Senior Gentry Fortuno came on in relief to start the 7th and pitched into the 9th inning. With bases loaded and 1 out, Fortuno induced a ground ball to 2nd base where the feed to short got the 2nd out and the throw to complete the double play to 1st was missed. The game ended on that play as the go ahead run crossed the plate to make the final score 2-1.

Offensively the Falcons were able to get 6 hits on the night. Mark Vientos and Dylan O'Connell both had 2 hits as O'Connell got the lone RBI in the top of the 7th to push the game into extra innings. Eric Rivera and Ricky Presno each got a hit as Rivera also got 2 HBP's. They faced a potential 1st round draft pick in Austin Smith. His fastball topped at 95 mph and sat at 92-94 all night long. The young Falcons did a great job putting the bat on the ball, but just couldn't get the big hits when needed.

The Falcons (17-5) will play their last regular season home game on Thursday, April 16th at 7 pm when they take on the Trojans from Taravella.
