An estimated 900 players, coaches, umpires and fans visited Scottsboro's Bynum Park this weekend for the Baseball Players Association Super Regional World Series Qualifier Tournament, the Alabama Tigers Tri-State Showdown.
The Alabama Tigers Baseball Team went undefeated to capture the 14 and under Major Divison Championship and qualify for the 2005 BPA World Series. The 14U Tigers, part of the tournament host Alabama Tigers Baseball Club, are based in Scottsboro and have players from around Northeast Alabama. The Tigers are coached by Tony Camp, Alvin Elkins, Kenny Dixson and Barry Chandler.
The Tigers' bats were hot throughout the tournament and carried them to the 4-0 record. The Tigers were led at the plate by Brandon Camp (Scottsboro) who only made 2 outs in the tournament, hit .750 with 6 walks and 4 RBI, Logan Remson (Boaz) .533 with 8 RBIs and 1 home run, Johnny Elkins (Sylvania) .700 with 4 walks and 5 RBIs and Matt Hincy (Centre) .571 with 4 walks and  4 RBIs. Colby Dixson (Sylvania), Travis Barnett (Huntsville), Todd Haynes (Section) and Justin Mackey (Sand Rock) all hit over .400. Cameron Fitzgerald (Stevenson) blasted a 2 run homer and had 3 RBI in the Championship Game.
Winning pitchers Saturday were Chris Altman (Boaz) throwing a complete game in Game 1, Camp with last inning help from Hincy shutting out the Sidewinders from Huntsville in Game 2 and Remson taking Game 3 with Hincy picking up the save. In the Sunday Championship Game against the Gardendale Rockets, Elkins got the win. Elkins pitched a no hitter through 4 innings and held an 8-0 lead, but tired and watched the Rockets stage a big comeback effort. Hincy came on to record the final out in the 7th with 2 men on base and recorded his second save of the tournament to seal the 11-7 victory.
Other winners in the tournament were as follows:
11 and Under Majors - North Alabama Vipers
11 and Under AAA - North Georgia Chiefs
12 and Under Majors - North Alabama Vipers
12 and Under AAA - North Jackson Baseball
