LOCATION: University of Victoria Field Hockey Turf

The Canadian Women’s National Team will take on Team USA in a four-match test series from May 19 to 23. The teams will compete on the University of Victoria’s Field Hockey Turf, home of the UVic Vikes. This series marks the beginning of Canada’s campaign toward the 2016 Olympic Games. For the USA, this is preparation for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London.

This will be the first time Canada has played the US since the semi-finals of the 2011 Pan American Games in October. The American side defeated Canada 4 – 2 and went on to upset the undefeated Leonas of Argentina in the finals, earning a berth to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Canadian Women will assemble for a four day training camp in Vancouver from May 15 to 18 before travelling to Victoria. A squad of 23 players and four reserves has been selected for the series. The staff team leading Team Canada includes Peter Milkovich as Project Lead Coach with Paul Bundy and Krista Thompson as Assistant Coaches.

“As our National Programs undergo a transition phase, we will be giving a broader group of players the opportunity to establish themselves as part of the team focused on 2016,” says Alan Brahmst, Director of National Teams. “Our entire program is geared toward a finish at the top of the podium at the 2015 Pan American Games on home turf in Toronto – this is the beginning of a building phase.

“This series against a strong American side offers the perfect opportunity to implement some new concepts we’ve been introducing within our Junior National Program,” says Brahmst. “We will also be having a look at some of the players pushing for a spot on the Women’s Senior National Team."
