Congratulations to former HOOTS catcher, Matt Canepa, selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round of the Major League Draft. He was the 449th pick overall and joins the ranks of many HOOTS players asked to play at the professional level. At Cal Poly, Canepa played in 53 games with 48 starts (44 as catcher and four as designated hitter), finishing as Cal Poly's second-best hitter with a .326 average. He had five hits in a game against Cal State Northridge on April 14, Cal Poly's first five-hit game since 2003, and was third on the team in RBIs with 35. Canepa produced nine- and seven-game hitting streaks and finished with 15 multiple-hit games. A transfer from College of San Mateo, Canepa threw out 17 of 44 would-be base stealers this season.
