The North Royalton Bears played a pair in the Hockey Time- President’s Day Tournament on Sunday, February 16th winning both. The two wins advance the Bears to the semi-finals while improving their overall record to 29-13-1.
The Bears played the Beaver County, Midget U18 A team in the early game defeating the Badgers 4-2. North Royalton got on the board two times in the opening period, both goals were scored by Aaron Schmitt; Jeremy Gripp assisted on Schmitt’s first goal and Michael Schlegel and Christian Fernandez were credited with helpers on the second score. Just over two minutes after the Badgers cut the Bears lead to one midway through the 2nd period, Aaron Schmitt took a Branden Walsh feed and buried a brilliant shorthanded goal for his third of the game; also picking an assist on the goal was Michael Dzoba. The line of Walsh, Schmitt and Dzoba connected again with Dzoba scoring midway through the 3rd to give the Bears a three goal lead. The Badgers added a late goal to reduce North Royalton’s lead to two but couldn’t get any closer thanks to strong net minding from Marc Silver.
North Royalton scored early and often against Northern Kentucky, downing the Norse 7-1. The Bears got three goals in each the 1st and 2nd periods and exchanged goals with Northern Kentucky in the 3rd. Jeremy Gripp got the Bears started blasting a shot from the point past the Norse keeper; assists were awarded to Aaron Schmitt (1G/2A) and Steven Vinyard. Branden Walsh (3G/1A) was next tapping home a Schmitt pass followed by Schmitt getting one of his own burying a Michael Dzoba (1G/2A) feed. Dzoba scored the Bears 4th goal of the game finishing a great feed from Michael Schlegel (2A). Walsh got his 2nd of the game assisted by Aaron Wynbrandt and Peyton Matthews ripped home a Schlegel pass for the Bears final goal of the middle frame. Northern Kentucky scored their lone goal midway through the 3rd only to have it answered by Walsh who scored unassisted for his 3rd of the game. Tyler Roesch played well between the pipes for the Bears picking up his 17th win of the season.

The North Royalton Bears skated past the Jackson Polar Bears, 8-5, in league play on February 3rd. Prior to giving up 8 goals to the Bears, Jackson had shutout their opponent in 11 of their last 12 league games including a shutout against North Royalton on January 25th. After giving up an early score, the Bears evened things at one apiece when Brandon Walsh (2G/3A) scored a brilliant shorthanded goal assisted by Michael Dzoba (1G/5A). The game didn’t stayed tied for long as Jackson netted a power play goal just a minute later and took a 2-1 lead into the break.
North Royalton wasted little time bringing the score even as they netted one just 18 seconds into the middle period, a power play goal scored by Aaron Schmitt (3G/3A) with assists being awarded to Aaron Wynbrandt (2G/2A) and Walsh. Schmitt found the back of the net for his 2nd of the game just minutes later burying a nice feed from Dzoba. Jackson got the next score to even the game at three, a goal that seemingly ignited the Bears who ripped off four straight scores. Michael Dzoba scored to give the Bears a one goal lead and Wynbrandt deposited his first to extend the lead to two. Dzoba found the back of the net next only to have the goal waved off for a phantom crease violation but the Bears were not deterred as Wynbrandt added his 2nd score of the game to give North Royalton the 6-3 through the end of two periods.
Aaron Schmitt scored his 3rd goal of the game for the hat-trick when he redirected a Preston Vinyard (1A) shot with less than ten minutes left in the game to put the Bears up by four. After giving up a short-handed goal, Walsh scored on that same power-play to give the Bears their 8th goal. Jackson netted one more for their 5th goal of the game in the final minutes but couldn’t close the gap any further thanks to the solid play of Bear’s goalie Tyler Roesch.
The win improves the Bears league record to 10-4 and their overall record to 23-13-1.
