The North Royalton Bears participated in the Bowling Green/Mister Spots Holiday Classic held December 27th-29th at Bowling Green State University.

The Bears opened play Friday evening, the 27th, against ArchBishop Moeller High School from Cincinnati and the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie. North Royalton scored goals in the 1st period (Michael Dzoba from Aaron Schmitt) and in the 2nd period (Aaron Schmitt from Dzoba and Branden Walsh) and held the 2-0 lead until just under 4 minutes remaining in the game. Moeller scored on the power play to cut the lead in half and then netted the game tying goal with just 7.5 seconds remaining in the contest.

North Royalton played two games on Saturday, December 28th dropping the first game to the tournament host and eventual tournament champion Bowling Green High School 8-2 and then losing a hard fought battle against Toledo St. Francis 4-0.

In the early game on Saturday, the Bears battled hard through the opening period and only trailed the Bobcats 1-0 at the break. The Bobcats offense exploded in the middle frame scoring four times in a 5 minute stretch. North Royalton added one of their own in the 2nd when Brandon Walsh scored shorthanded reducing the Bowling Green lead to four. The Bobcats proved too much for the Bears scoring three more in the final period against another lone goal from North Royalton (Walsh from Aaron Schmitt and Timmy Orlosky).

North Royalton faced off against Toledo, St. Francis Saturday night and despite losing 4-0 played significantly better than they did in the morning contest. Marc Silver played quite well for North Royalton stopping 29 of the 33 shots making several critical stops along the way. St. Francis netted solo goals in the 1st and 2nd periods before putting in a pair in the final frame.

The Bears played in the consolation game on Sunday, December 29th skating against the Moeller Crusaders for the 2nd time in three days. The Crusaders, who stunned the Bears scoring two goals late to earn a tie the last time the two teams faced off, wasted little time getting on the board scoring three goals in the opening 5 minutes of the contest. The Bears hung tough adding a power play goal towards the end of the opening period when Michael Schlegel redirected one past the Moeller net minder, picking up assists on the score were Angelo Nero and AJ Bogdan. The two teams each netted a pair of goals in the middle frame- North Royalton’s goals were scored by Cameron Megazzinni , assisted by AJ Bogdan, on the power play and Branden Walsh who added his 2nd shorthanded goal of the tournament. North Royalton reduced the Moeller lead to one midway through the 3rd period when Michael Dzoba netted a beautiful one timer- assisted by Walsh and Aaron Schmitt. Moeller put the game away a couple moments after Dzoba’s score adding their 6th goal and taking a two goal lead. North Royalton pressured hard but it was Moeller that hit the scoreboard yet again scoring the game’s final goal with just under two minutes remaining.
