PERFECT GAME 17U NATIONALS

The SCP 2009's begin competition in the Perfect Game 17U Nationals the week of July 8 in East Cobb, Georgia.

GAME 1

Starting Pitcher: Corey Roberts  6 IP; 3 H; 1 R; 3 K

Justin Setzer 1 IP; 1K

Hoping to break a tie going back to the Perfect Game World's in Jupiter versus the All Star Baseball Academy the Panthers locked up in a pitchers duel and again finished in a tie against the yanks from PA. With no score through 5 innings the All Stars scored a run on two hits in the sixth. The Panthers matched the run in their half of the inning without getting a hit off of a walk by Josh Greene; a sacrifice by Tyler Miller and a score on an error. Brian Holberton broke up the All Star no hitter in the seventh for the Cats only hit.

Leading Hitters: Seth Neely 2-2 (2B); Tyler Zupcic 2-4.

The Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third extended the lead to 7-1 for a win. Starting pitcher Corbin Shive dominated the 6-4-3 team with three pitch command and cruised to his 5th win of the season. Seth Neely and Tyler Zupcic both collected two hits; other Panthers getting hits were Brian Holberton; Richie Shaffer; Tyler Tewell; Rafael Gonzalez; Josh Greene and Corey Roberts.

Winning Pitcher: Justin Setzer (6-1)

Leading Hitters: Tyler Tewell 2-3 (HR/3RBI); Richie Shaffer 2-3 (3B); Ty Linton 2-4; Seth Neely 2-4.

The game versus the Texans was a series of lightening and rain delays that made for a long day. There was some lightening in the Panther bats as they pounded out 12 hits to win going away 11-3. Tyler Tewell supplied the big blow with a 3 run bomb in the 3rd to put the Cats out front. Richie Shaffer; Ty Linton and Seth Neely all had 2 hits and Corbin Shive; Rafael Gonzalez; C.A. Clayton and Shane Basen all had hits. Starting pitcher Mat Batts had to exit the game after 2 scoreless innings due to a long delay and Justin Setzer and Jesse Brewer closed the game out on the mound.

Atlanta Blue Jays  7.......................................................7......8.....0

The Panthers fell out of championship play consideration with a 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Blue Jays. After falling behind 0-3 in the first the Cats could not quite mount a comeback. Tyler Miller 2-4 with 2 doubles; Rafael Gonzalez 1-2 with a double and Brian Holberton 1-1 led the offense for the Panthers. Starting pitcher Luke Bard took the loss; giving up 2 earned runs in 4.33 innings pitched. Ryan Butler; Jesse Brewer and Richie Shaffer pitched in relief.

Winning Pitcher: Joseph Shealy (4-1)  5 IP; 3 H; 0 R; 5 K. Relief: Justin Setzer  2 IP; 1 H; 0 R; 5 K.

Leading Hitters: Josh Greene 2-3; Ty Linton 1-2; C.A. Clayton 1-3 (2B).

Joe Shealy and Justin Setzer combined for a shut out of the Clippers. Both struck out 5 while spreading out 4 hits. The Panthers scratched out runs in the 1rst and 6th for the 2009 Panthers 20th win of the summer season.

The 2009 Panthers will participate at UNCC and Wingate the weekend of July 17.

SETH NEELY COMMITS TO CLEMSON

SETH NEELY  2009 Rock Hill High School has committed to attend school and play baseball for the Clemson Tigers. Seth will help lead the Rock Hill Bearcats this spring in his senior year in their quest for a district and state title. Congratulations to Seth and his family Chris; Sandy and brother Ethan.

RICHIE SHAFFER NAMED AFLAC ALL AMERICAN

RICHIE SHAFFER HAS BEEN NAMED AN AFLAC ALL AMERICAN FOR 2008.

Richie Shaffer competed with 38 select rising high school seniors in the Aflac All American Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday; August 9. In the game televised on FOX SPORTS; Richie and the East squad came back in the bottom of the ninth down 0-2 and scored 3 runs then held on for a victory. Richie made the defensive play of the game with a diving catch of a Texas League fly ball. At the plate he went 0 for 2 with 2 walks and scored the game winning run.

CONGRATULATIONS to Richie and his family.

PERFECT GAME WWBA 18U

PERFECT GAME WWBA 18U CHAMPIONSHIP

The South Charlotte Panthers 2009's competed in the WWBA 18U Nationals in East Cobb, Georgia the week of July 1. The Cats completed pool play 5-0 and advanced to the round of 32 out of 180 teams. The team lost to eventual tournament runner up 2-1 in the round of 32 game.

Leading Hitters: Tyler Zupcic 2-3 (2B); Tyler Tewell 2-3 (2 RBI).

The Cats won their opening game 8-2 after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and not looking back. Starting pitcher and game winner Corey Roberts pitched into the sixth.  The hitters were led by Tyler Tewell and Tyler Zupcic who both collected 2 hits. Also getting hits for the Cats were Corbin Shive; C.A. Clayton; Rafael Gonzalez and Ty Linton.

The Panthers took a half game lead in pool play with a 2-0 record with their game 2 win. Corbin Shive threw a gem for his fourth win of the year going 6.33 innings and not giving up a run off of 4 hits while striking out 10. The T crew Tyler Zupcic, Tyler Tewell and Ty Linton led the offense with hits as well as C.A. Clayton with a double and run and Casey Gebhardt.

The Panthers took an early 2 run lead that they let get away in the fourth with some uncharacteristic poor defense. The Cats fought back for a 4-4 tie and then won the game in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded scratch hit by 1B Rafael Gonzalez. Mat Batts pitched an outstanding complete game for the win giving up only 4 hits and none after the fourth while striking out 6. Richie Shaffer was 1 for 1 with an RBI; walked 3 times and scored the winning run to lead the offense. The Panthers are now 3-0 in pool play and lead by a game and a half going into game 4.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead and closed it out in a run rule game. The Cats are assured of advancing to the final 32 as the pool winners and will play their final pool game at the East Cobb complex Saturday morning. Game and schedule details to follow.

The Cats scored in 5 of 7 innings and completed pool play 5-0 to advance to the championship round of 32 teams. Tyler Tewell hit two doubles and drove in 3 runs to lead the offense. Joe Shealy picked up his third win of the season and the game was closed out by lefty Justin Setzer.

The Panthers lost in the round of 32 in a pitchers duel versus the Sparks from Illinois. The loss ended the 18U event for the 2009 Panthers.

The SC Panther 2010 team began play in the USA BASEBALL 16U CHAMPIONSHIPS; June 21.

Corbin Shive (2-0) struck out 6 and scattered 8 hits in helping lead the Cats to an opening game one win. C Brian Holberton was 3-3 with a double and triple driving in 3 runs to lead an eight hit attack. 3B Trey Laney hit a deep home run to left and Panthers Josh Greene, Kurt Semeniuk and Corbin Shive all collected hits.

The Panthers fell to 1-1 in pool play with a loss to the Diamond Hawks. Starting pitcher Ryan Butler took a hard luck loss. The Cat hitters were held to 8 hits with 3 of those by 1B Andy Wilson including 2 doubles.

The junior Cats showed some heart in a big come back win. Down 1-5 in the bottom of the sixth Trey Laney drove in two runs to make the game 5-3. Winning pitcher Alex Tomasovich shut the side down in the top of the seventh including 2 strike outs. In the bottom of the seventh; Josh Greene led off with a walk and came around to score on two separate overthrows. With one out Brian Holberton walked; followed by a two out single from Andy Wilson and then a bases clearing and game winning double deep to center field by Rafael Gonzalez for a walk off win. The win advances the Panthers to the top half of the second round of pool play.

The Panthers entered second round pool play with a commanding 10 run victory over The Yard. Starting pitcher Andy Wilson picked up his fifth win of the SCP season with a solid 5 innings of work. Ten Panther hitters collected at least one hit  and nine scored in the run rule contest. Alex Tomasovich and Mikal Hill both drove in 2 runs.

The Panthers finished pool play 4-1 and will go to the round of 32 as the 12th seed to face the Lousiana All Star Mets Thursday morning. The Cat defense was the initial hero of the day as they made the throws, cuts and tags that led to 6 of the first 9 outs on the base paths as the hard hitting Scorpions looked to exploit the Cats on the base paths. Defensive props go to C Brett Austin with 2 throwing assists and a block and tag at the plate; CF Josh Greene with 3 outfield assists and 1B Rafael Gonzalez with 3 assists on cut plays. Tied 3-3 in the fifth the Panther bats came alive and put 9 runs on the board. The offense was led by Brian Holberton going 4-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Alex Tomasovich went 3-4 including a deep double driving in 3 runs. Other Panthers getting multiple hits in the game were Rafael Gonzalez, Andy Wilson and Josh Greene. Alex Tomasovich came in to pitch in relief and held the Scorpions to 1 run with 2 strike outs in 2 innings of work.

Winning Pitcher: Ryan Butler (1-1) 6 IP; 0 H; 0 R; 5 K.

Leading Hitters: Brett Austin 2-2 (2/2B); Logan Ratledge 2-3; Rafael Gonzalez 2-3; Peter Hendel 1-1 (3B).

Ryan Butler pitched a six inning no hitter to earn the win and his first Panther win of the season. 2011 players Brett Austin 2 for 2 with 2 doubles; Logan Ratledge 2 for 3 and Peter Hendel 1-1 with a triple to score two runs led the offensive attack. Rafael Gonzalez collected two more hits and 2 RBIs in the game. Ryan struck out 5, did not allow a ball out of the infield  and had one runner reach second base in the game.

The Panthers lost out in the round of 16 to the Dallas Yankees. Jesse Brewer took the loss; giving up 5 hits in six innings of work. The Cats had their chances with runners left on base in scoring position 5 of 7 innings but could not get the big hit to score.

The junior Panthers completed the USA Championships 5-2 and based on runs against finished 9th in the 72 team field.

The 2010 team will compete next in a doubleheader versus the Sand Gnats at Winthrop University on Wednesday July 2 and then at the University of South Carolina Underclass Showcase the weekend of July 4-6.
