PERFECT GAME NATIONAL UNDERCLASS

The 2010 SC Panthers traveled to Fort Myers, Florida where they competed in the Perfect Game World Wood Bat National Underclass Tournament.

The Panthers finished pool play with a 2 - 2 record and did not advance to championship round play in the 66 team field.

GAME 1

SC Panthers  0................................................................0.....3.....2

Midland Braves  4..........................................................4.....6.....0

The Panthers opened the event with a first round game versus the pre tournament favorite Midland Braves/Royals Scout Team. The Braves jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and extended it to 4-0 in the third inning. The Braves pitchers limited the Panthers to three hits. Starting pitcher Jesse Brewer (7-5) took the loss yet with the exception of the 3 run third held the powerful Braves in check. Jesse worked 5 innings; giving up 6 hits while striking out 5. Getting hits for the Cats were Rafael Gonzalez; Tyler Alberts and Kurt Semeniuk. RF Maverick Miles made an outstanding running catch deep to right and doubled off a runner to kill a scoring threat. Zach Westcott pitched a scoreless 6th.

GAME 2

South Florida Bandits  0....................................................0.....1.....0

Kurt Semeniuk (4-0) threw a complete game one hit shut out for his fourth victory of the season  at the City of Palm Stadium; "Spring Training Home of the Boston Red Sox". Kurt struck out 7 and walked none for the win. The Panthers broke open the scoring in the second innng when SS Eric Brenk doubled followed by a Maverick Miles single and Tyler Alberts double. The Cats collected 11 hits and scored 6 runs. Logan Ratledge and Josh Greene collected two hits apiece to lead the offense.

Deep South Baseball  5.....................................................5.....11.....1

The Panthers left 11 runners stranded and lost 5-1 in the afternoon double header. Starting pitcher Taylor Reeves gave up 4 in 2 and two thirds innings. Andy Wilson in relief pitched 3 and a third of scoreless relief to give the Cats a chance at a comeback. Logan Ratledge led the offense with two hits.

Triple Threat Baseball  0...............................................0.....6.....1

Tyler Alberts (1-1) picked up the win with 5 innings of scoreless pitching. Alex Tomasovich completed the shut out on the mound. Brian Holberton and Josh Greene led the offense with two hits apiece including two RBIs each.

Logan Ratledge led the offense for the weekend going 5 for 9 with two doubles. Rafael Gonzalez finished the weekend 4 for 10 with a double and Tyler Alberts was 3 for 6 with two doubles.

There were a number of team records broken by 2010 players during the weekend of play. RF Kurt Semeniuk recorded two outfield assists in a game to tie a record when he HIT the cut off man perfectly twice to record outs at second and third respectively helping snuff any scoring threats by Triple Threat. Alex Tomasovich completed both plays for outs.

Josh Greene broke the single season stolen base record  held by Whit Merrifield (47) when he stole his 48th.

Brian Holberton broke the the single season RBI record held by Preston Shuey (44) with two RBIs to give him 45 for the year. Brian also extended the doubles record he currently held to 20.

JOSEPH SHEALY EARNS EAGLE SCOUT

2009 SCP Joseph Shealy recently completed the requirements and became an Eagle Scout of America.  Joseph is a senior year at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. and will be on the baseball diamond this spring for the Sabres.

Joseph becomes the second Panther to make Eagle Scout joining Byron McKoy in the class of 2007. Congratulations to Joseph and his parents, Darrell and Robin on this highest of  honors.

ERIC BRADY COMMITS TO DUKE

2009 SC Panther ERIC BRADY verbally committed to attend school and play baseball at DUKE UNIVERSITY. Eric will showcase his skills this fall for the Panthers and then help lead his Green Hope High School program this spring before joining the Blue Devils next fall. Congratulations to Eric and his parents Dave and  Cathy.

SCP 2009

The SCP 2009's completed the weekend with 2 wins and 2 losses in the initial fall season.

Game 1

SC Panthers  7

On Deck O's  1

Winning Pitcher: Justin Lykins (1-0)

Leading Hitters: Shane Basen 2-3; 3 RBI's. Tyler Miller 2-4; 2 Runs Scored.

Justin Lykins pitched 4 strong innings; striking out 5 and giving up 1 hit to lead the Cats to a game one victory. Joe Shealy; Jordan Hudson and Corey Roberts each pitched a shut out inning in relief.

Shane Basen drove in 3 runs. Tyler Miller had 2 hits; stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs to help lead the offense. Eric Brady, Tyler Tewell, Jordan Hudson and Seth Neely all collected hits in the game. The middle infield of Eric Brady, C.A. Clayton and Drew Casella made some nice defensive plays to hold the O's to 1 run.

Game 2

Heat Showcase  2

Winning Pitcher: Justin Setzer (8-1)

Leading Hitters: C.A. Clayton 3-4; 2B. Eric Brady 2-3; 2B. Seth Neely 2-3; 2B. Casey Gebhardt 2-3; 2B. Tyler Tewell 2-4; 2-2B. Shane Basen 1-3; HR, 2 RBI.

The Panthers fell behind 0-2 and then came back strong behind 7 extra base hits to beat the heat 9-2 behind starting pitcher Justin Setzer's program leading eigth win of the season.

Losing Pitcher: Jesse Brewer (7-2)

Leading Hitters: Shane Basen 1-1; 2B. C.A. Clayton 1-3.

The Panther bats cooled off in the second game of the Saturday double header and the Cats took their first loss of the fall season.

Losing Pitcher: Corey Roberts (4-4)

Leading Hitters: Seth Neely 1-2; RBI. Shane Basen 1-3; 2B. C.A. Clayton 1-3; 2B. Eric Brady 1-3; 2B.

The Panthers fought back after being down 0-2 to take a 3-2 lead into the sixth behind a strong five inning outing from starting pitcher Jordan Hudson only to see the Dirtbags score 2 and take the win.

SCP 2010

The 2010 Panthers completed the weekend 1-3.

Game 1

Winning Pitcher: Kurt Semeniuk (3-0)

Leading Hitters: Eric Brenk 2-2. Noah Holmes 1-2; 3B. Maverick Miles 1-3.

The Junior Cats exploded for a 10 run third inning and run ruled the Express in five innings. Starting pitcher Kurt Semeniuk struck out 5 in four innings for the win. The Cat defense turned 2 double plays including a nice 5-4-3; Holmes to Ratledge to Reeves to end the game.

Game 2

Dirtbags  6

Losing Pitcher: Taylor Reeves (0-1)

Leading Hitters: Noah Holmes 2-3. Alex Tomasovich 1-3.

The Panthers fell behind early and did not mount a comeback in losing to the Dirtbags.

Game 3

SC Panthers  6

On Deck O's  9

Losing Pitcher: Eric Brenk (0-1)

Leading Hitters: Miles Maverick 3-4. Andy Wilson 2-4; 2B. Brian Holberton 2-4.

The O's busted out for a 4 run second inning and held on for a 9-6 victory. The Panthers collected 11 hits and six runs but could not get back in the game.

Game 4

Bonecrushers  9

Losing Pitcher: Tyler Alberts (0-1)

Leading Hitters: Taylor Reeves 1-1; HR. Andy Wilson 1-2.

The Bonecrushers collected 14 hits versus the Cat pitchers and cruised to a victory. Taylor Reeves supplied the offensive highlight for the Cats with a deep 2 run Homer.

 Both Panther teams will compete next week at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary.

 

2009 SC Panther and Providence HS senior Richie Shaffer has recently been selected by ESPN as a top ten national prospect in the 2009 senior class.
