Mud Dawgs Advance (click here for the complete story)

Hey Oglesbys and Moons...  here's the play by play...

The regular season champion Maselli Mud Dawgs will play on after an exciting 17-7 win vs. the Patriots Saturday afternoon.  Maselli's jumped out to an early lead and fended off a gutsy surge by the Patriots in the top of the 4th.  The first round of the AAA Tournament yielded no upsets as the other three top finishers also advance to the semi-final round.

The Mud Dawgs lead 6-0 at the end of the first inning following as Ryan fielded an infield pop-up and struck out one and a Patriot runner was forced out at second on a nice scoop by Frankie at short.  Marcus started Maselli's powerful rally in the bottom of the first with a bunt single.  Ryan followed with another bunt single and Frankie knocked them both in with a gapper between short and third.  Johnny Painter reached second base on an error. Frankie and Johnny scored as Augie worked the pitcher for a walk. Johnny Moon and Wyatt drew walks and Tommy knocked Augie and Frankie in with a hard hit ball through the gap to right field.

The Patriots answered with one run in the top of the second before Ryan shut them down with two strikeouts in the bottom of their order and Johnny Painter made an unassisted out at first base on the Pats leadoff hitter. Maselli's scored 4 in the second as Willy drew a lead off walk, Luke reached on an error, and they worked their way into scoring position. Marcus and Ryan knocked in 2 runs and Johnny Painter reached on an error which drove in Ryan putting the score at 10-1.

The Patriots drew two walks early in the third to put two in scoring position. The Mud Dawgs moved Luke Durkin to the mound, the Patriots put the ball in play and Johnny Moon raced back to make a clutch fly out in right field holding both runners. The lead runner advanced and scored on a ball that got by the Mud Dawgs infield. With the bases loaded, Willy scooped a ball at second and dished it off to Johnny Painter at first to end the inning stranding three.  The Mud Dawgs continued their rally in the bottom of the third as Wyatt lead off with a base hit and Tommy turned a bunt single into a four bagger on overthrows.  Willy drew a walk and Luke smashed one down the third base line before Marcus scored Willy on a nice line drive to left field.  Ryan hit a beautiful double scoring Luke before the Patriots struck out two and their right fielder stole a base hit from Johnny Painter with a nice catch.

The score was 15 to 2 at the end of three innings so the Patriots needed three runs in the fourth to overcome the "ten run rule" and force another inning.  The Green Machine drew two walks and Durkin struck out out one before the top of the Patriot's order began a 5 run rally on a single, a double and two more walks.  Frankie Graham took the mound and shut down the middle of the Patriot's order with a strike out and a heads up tag out between second and third.

The Mud Dawgs came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth needing 2 runs to force a complete game with a 10 run lead.  Johnny Moon battled through a tough at bat, drew a walk and worked his way into scoring position.  Tommy pounded a base hit and reached second on an error, scoring Johnny Moon. Willy came to the plate with one away and drew another walk on a full count after holding up on a tempting "high one".  With one away, two on, and needing only one more run to end the game Maselli's sent Luke Durkin to the plate.  Luke pounded one to right field to score Tommy and put the game on the books at 17-7, advancing the Mud Dawgs to the next round.

Victory Chevrolet, Don Wilson DDS, and Neve Roses were unable to upset the other top regular season finishers during first round play. Maselli's will face number four seed McKinley Construction in the semi-final round Tuesday evening at 5:30 on Kenneally Field.  Guest and Woo meets number three seed SonoMarin Landscaping on Wednesday evening. The Dawgs 3 and 0 regular season record against McKinley Construction is no guarantee of an easy pass to the finals on Friday, June 17th as McKinley upset second place Guest and Woo in an impressive pitchers' duel during their final regular season meeting.
