I, Coach Griffin along with Coach Turner, Coach Jesse would extend a heart felt thank you to all the athletes who continued came to track practice. Your presence enabled the 16 Junior Olympians to increase their focus, motivation and desire to compete at a high level on the national stage in Virginia. Thank You!!! We came back to a "Heroes Welcome" thanks to several of our newly volunteered Board Members on August 7, 2006. We truly appreciated the orgainizing and networking while putting together a great celebration for our athletes. This was the first and hopefully a continued tradition for the Jack Rabbit Family. Jessica, Stephanie, Christine, and Stacy deserve great credit for a welcoming atmosphere. They all took time out of their busy (Back To School) schedules to honor the 16 athletes who represented our organization with record breaking performances, great sportsmanship, and humbleness which others strive to emulate. Thank you!!! "You can't feel a part of the CLUB until you do your part within the TEAM ," stresses Coach Griffin Now for the few or many who do not know how our athletes performed; here's what Coach Griffin submitted to the news media: Five Hills Track & Field Soar to Record Breaking Performances The Five Hills Track & Field Club has just concluded a stellar 2006 Summer Track Campaign. These athletes produced the Joel Ferrell Memorial Award, 7 Gold Medals, 4 National Record, 3 Silvers Medals, a Bronze and 6 Copper Finalist Medals. The great success by these athletes makes it hard to pick a starting point, so let’s start with the Jack Rabbits arriving in Hampton Roads, Virginia late July 2006 with the Texas style heat indexes at or near 114 plus. Sixteen of the 17 athletes competing wasted no time achieving golden riches with record breaking performances. Leading the way was Robert L. Griffin, III who was honored near the end of the Junior Olympics Games with the presentation of the Joel Ferrell Memorial Award. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), along with the assistance and the guidance of the Joel Ferrell family, established the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Memorial Award to recognize the athletic ability and sportsmanship of an athlete representing each official sport at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. In addition to the award presented at the Games, each recipient's name will be engraved on a special plaque at the AAU National Headquarters. Joel Ferrell, a former aerospace engineer, made numerous contributions to the AAU. He held several positions with the AAU, including the presidency from 1976-78. He was also a vice president of the United State Olympic Committee (USOC). In December 1988, he passed away in his hometown of Tullahoma, Tennessee. This award is the most prestigious award given in the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Norfolk State University was Track & Field venue with over 12,000 athletes participating. Griffin, III (16) came into the Junior Olympics to break the 400m Hurdle record he set during the finals of the 2005 Junior Olympics. The time to beat was his 52.79. In the prelims of the 400H, he made a sound statement sprinting 52.16: a new record. He felt he could run faster, so in the finals he came out firing on all cylinders and stop the clock at 51.77. Griffin, III accomplished an amazing feat to break the 400m Hurdles records three times; that’s a record. The 110m Hurdles is his forte, and he would not disappoint. In the prelims he flew over the sticks with grace to a 13.88. The fastest Intermediate Boys performance since 1997 by University of Texas Star Hurdler Jermaine Cooper who holds the record at 13.74. Griffin, III came into the finals motivated in pursuit of the record. By all accounts he sprinted flawlessly over the hurdles to an astonishing win; the clock recorded 13.88. Finally Griffin, III concluded his Junior Olympics in the 400m. He was ranked number two coming into the games in the quarter mile. His best 400m was 48.42; the number one guy had run a few 47s, Griffin, III was in lane 2: the gun sounded. The number one guy held all sprinters at bay, but Robert came blazing to the finish line astonishing the race by race announcer. He won the Silver Medal in a personal best time of 47.78 in the 400m Dash. The Jack Rabbits celebrated their first two Gold Medals of the 2006 Junior Olympics by the throwing power and grace of the Jack Rabbits’ Quiet Thunder: Chamaya Turner (11). She came out in form to out distance her nearest competitor by 12’ 3” to sail the Discus 83’ 11”. This young lady is a force; yet discipline to the letter of perfection. Throwing Coach Turner put a tremendous amount experience, knowledge, efforts and commitment into our throwing program. He can now reap big dividends, because the Quiet Thunder came back a day later and broke the record in the Sub Midget Shot Put. Chamaya’s first toss of competition won her Gold at 33’ 9”, because no one came to within 6 inches of her initial toss. On her third throw, Chamaya put together balance, thrust, and explosive power sending the iron mass 34’ 11”. “After her third throw, I knew she was going to break the record,” intoned Coach Turner. In the first round of the finals, Chamaya thrust the 6 pound iron ball forth like it was a golf ball to a victorious 36’ 1.75” for a new national record. She bettered the 2000 year mark by 1.5 inches. All who know Chamaya will agree; she’s a Quiet Thunder. “I told the Central Texas Community they would hear Brandin Byrd’s name in the ensuing four years of his High School legacy. Well, his lists of achievements started on August 2, 2006,” stated Coach Griffin. Brandon Byrd (14) won the Youth Boys Triple Jump with an astonishing triple hop down the runway yielding 42’ 1”. “Our Jumpers’ goal is to nail the first jump and have their competitors focus on our yielded performance,” yelled Jumping Coach Watson. “Brandin worked hard all season even performing jumping drills, sprints and stairs hours before climbing into the backseat of their family vehicle enroute to Virginia,” professed Coach Griffin. Brandin first jump (42’1”) and his final jump of 41’ 7’ were the longest of the Youth Boys Trip Jump competition. Steffin McCarter (9) had to work more mental than physical through all his competition this year. He was targeted and taunted throughout his quest to compete at a high level. He broke three records at the Junior Olympics. His 200m Dash record of 27.31 in the semis was broken two heats later. He broke the 100m in the semis with a scorching 13.27; yet could only mustard a Silver medal in the finals. The 100m Dash finals was all about overcoming mental issues or lack of sportsmanship. “I talked to Steffin for a long time telling him to focus on what he was taught and not the other boys meddling,” revealed Willie McCarter, Steffin’s father. “The way Steffin ran the 200m finals would have gave his coaches headaches. He got out quick and then slowed down to avoid one of the athletes previous taunting. At the 150m mark, Steffin flew by the leading sprinter for his second Gold Medal in as many years,” Coach Griffin explained. The Long Jump went according to plan; his first jump was 14’ 7”, which sent shock waves into the stands and to the competitive coaches. Though Steffin had won the Gold Medal, he complained about not having enough running room to accelerate faster. Coach Griffin on his final jump moved Steffin from a 68 feet start to 80 feet start. Steffin jumped 15’ 1.5” to break 2001 set mark by 1 inch. Making the most out of a great opportunity and training environment was Troy Vital (16). He is a determined 200m sprinter, but Coach Griffin asked his parents to keep him on a chosen path, which began in 2005. Vital had shown tremendous promise in the 400m Hurdles in 2005. He was a Regional 9 finalist and needed some agility instructions and boost of confidence, plus it only helps that the fastest athlete in the nation in the 400m Hurdles was on his team. Troy ran a personal best and second fastest time of 56.13 in the Junior Olympic prelims. His confidence grew and viewing great performances aided in making significant adjustments to his hurdling versus flying arms and hopping over the hurdles. In the finals, Troy ran a strong 300m, and his final 100m of the 400m hurdles was captivating. He finished third with a personal best time of 54.82; a half blink of an eye out of second place (54.67). Troy entered the Junior Olympics ranked 15th overall. He did win the Silver Medal in the Intermediate Boys Triple Jump with 45’ 5”. Troy had to rely on his stable mate Griffin, III to help him get through the tough second phase of jumping. Troy persistence and his part time coach (Griffin, III) skillful eye really helped him get back to the level of jumping his team, coaches, and track family had expected. Jenna Mc Arthur (14) came into the Junior Olympics determine to jump her best. She started her competition in the Triple Jump, and quickly began to apply techniques to extend her second phase of jumping distance. She place 5th overall with a personal best of 34’ 5.75”. The following day she found her way back to the runway for the Long Jump competition. McArthur won her flight jumping a personal best of 16’ 1.5”. She watched 12 girls make their attempts to exceed her mark. McArthur was 5th overall earning her second Copper Finalist Medal. Donovan Johnson (14) collected two Copper Finalist Medals in the Triple Jump and 100m Hurdles. If the Triple Jump was an accumulative event, Johnson would have been the clear winner. His jumps range from 39’ 11” to 40’ 7’75”. His only scratch (barley) was estimated at or near 43’. He placed 6th overall in a competitive field. Hurdling is the name of the game as Donovan can sprint over the barrier without hesitation. He won his prelims heat in a splendid 13.94. “In the finals, his start was not his best, though his hurdling competitors knew he would be at the finish line for the call of the race,” acknowledged Coach Griffin. Johnson provided tremendous closing speed over the 7-8-9-and 10th hurdle at or near 1 second; a signature goal for hurdling. In a tongue twisting: fast, fierce, and ferocious race; Johnson placed 6th as four of the top six hit the finish line leaning. He also completed in the High Jumping clearing 5’2 for a national 16th overall standing. Jasmine Clarke (16) ran a season best 2:19.19 in the finals of the Young Women’ 800m Run. In her first year of Young Women Division, she placed a promising 5th overall. She was ranked 7th coming into the Junior Olympic Games. Brittany Clarke (14) teased the Jack Rabbits faithful with some amazing jumps too include a hairline scratch jump in excess of 19’. She placed 5th overall with a gravity defying jump of 17’ 9.25”. In her first year in the Intermediate Division, Brittany was ranked 12th coming into the Junior Olympic Games. Kapiolani Browne (15) finished 13th in her debut into the Intermediate Division in the Shot Put. Amongst many seasoned AAU athletes, Browne in her first AAU Season and Junior Olympics; she tossed the 8 pound iron ball in the air 34’ 7”. John Crockett, Jr (8) worked hard the entire week of the Junior Olympics. He jumped at his opportunity to compete on the final day. His best efforts yielded him 11’ 0.75” for 16th overall. Kelsey “Roxy” Sloan (14) was busy in distance running during the Junior Olympics. She won the first of three heats in the Youth Girls 1500m run in a season best time of 5:11.55. She would be 18th overall. She placed 5th in her heat in the 3000m with a time of 11:37.36. She was 18th overall. Kristen Grant (14) in her Junior Olympic debut was plagued by cold like symptoms, but continued her charge in the 1500m in a determined 6:27.40. Grant ran the 3000m Run achieving a top twenty finish in a respectable time of 12:32.95. Dillion Bien (11) is one of the hardest working young fellows on the team. He ran the Sub Midget Boys 3000m in a personal best time of 12: 42.42. Brigette “Hot Rod” Bien (8) is a Sprinter, Long Jumper and Middle Distance Runner all composed in pleasant; yet competitive packet. She made her debut on the national stage in the 800m where she lowered her half mile time for the third consecutive 800m race. She ran a personal of best 3:11.09. Ryan Babbs (11) a three year veteran of the Junior Olympics chose to sprint over barriers this year. He ran the Sub Midget 80m Hurdles in 16.95. He was 4th in his heat. The Five Hills Track & Field Club in the upcoming months shall be busy in the off season developing educational mentorship programs in addition to Cross Country preparations, and the 2007 Carl Lewis Indoor Track Meet in January 2007. “We are very indebted to the Central Texas Community for their support, our parents’ devotion and the athletes. We are building a community of support,” expressed Coach Griffin.
