In Honor of Patricia Williams

Posted by Reasa Davis at May 9, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Patricia Williams was born January 16, 1948 in McCook, Nebraska.  She resides on Fort Hood, Texas with her daughter, son in law and four grandchildren.  She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, Stage 4 in March of 2009.  The only reason they had found the cancer was from a CT scan because they were afraid Ms Williams was having a heart attack.  Since then she has had twenty chemo treatments in twenty four months and a major surgery, she continues to fight every day.  Ovarian Cancer diagnosed in the early stages is easily treated as opposed to Stage 4 which is a lifelong fight.  As a Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer fighter she will have cancer as a part of her life from here on out.  When a person is diagnosed with ovarian cancer and does not go into remission or comes out of remission it is then called Chronic Ovarian Cancer.  Her main focus is to fight and live everyday with joy.  The last two years Ms Williams has taught everyone around her to live life with a joy in every aspect of life. Ms Williams and The Five Hills Track Family give God all the praise for the continue fight and strength to live everyday with joy and laughter.

In Honor of Joannie Shedrick

Posted by Reasa Davis at May 9, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Joannie Shedrick was born May 9, 1962 in Cincinnati Ohio.  She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in September of 2004.  She was well aware that she might someday be diagnosed with thus disease because her mother carried the gene that causes Breast Cancer.  She was determined to fight this disease just like her mother did for 25 years.  Unfortunately for Joanie and her family, her mother finally succumb to Breast Cancer on August 11, 2004, one month before Joanie was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer.  Though devastated by the loss of her mother, she was determined to fight for her life.  Being a 3rd generation cancer carrier (her grandmother, mother, and her all carry the breast cancer gene known as BRCA1and BRCA2); she was placed on a rigorous 5 month chemotherapy regiment before the malignant tumors could be removed.  Doing this whole process, Joanie only had one goal in mind, “Living!”  She responded well to the chemotherapy, the tumors were removed.  Joannie has been cancer free since early January 2005 and is proud to be a breast cancer survivor for the last 6 years and counting, “Hallelujah”. She gives God all the Glory and the Five Hills Track and Field Club Family supports Joannie in all her efforts to broaden the education of Breast Cancer.  In HoWe love you Mrs. Board Member/Cooking Sensation, Joannie Shedrick!!!!!

The Wilson Family (Athletes: Ariana and Adrian) shares their love one’s story with us:

In Honor of Helen Hammond

My mother Helen Hammond, was full of life and would do anything for anyone, if she had you had it. She was definitely a people person. She worked two jobs to raise my brother and I. We always had what we needed, maybe not what we wanted... She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 at the age of 41. The cancer was already in stage 4, so she had a mastectomy, chemo therapy and radiation treatment for a while. She recovered pretty well and went back to work and to her same loving self. Then in 2000 she had to have surgery on her neck, there was a tumor and her 3rd and 4th vertebrae and they had deteriorated. Again she had to go through chemo and radiation. She was a fighter and was determined to see her grandbabies grow up (Ariana & AJ). She loved her those babies...my husband entered the army and we PCS'd to Fort Lewis, Washington. She was well enough and determined to travel and visited with us from Delaware and meet her new grandson AJ. Her health went up and down from 2004-2006. She was back and forth to the doctor still determined to live. She wouldn't let us know how sick she was getting, so we wouldn't worry. By Thanksgiving 2005, her health was seriously declining. Her doctor told us she would be lucky to make it to Christmas, but God let her stay with us a little while longer. She passed away April 17, 2006. It was Easter Monday that year. But, even in her last days she was in good spirits... She was a blessing to all that knew her. She was a devout Christian and her favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 3: 5-6.

Another quick story of how much she loved her family. In, February 2006 (a few months before she passed) she was in constant pain from the cancer spreading into her bones; however she still made a 7 hour road trip to visit us in Ft Drum, NY for our daughter, Ariana's, 6th birthday. The pain was so bad we had to practically tip toe around the house because the vibration from us walking was unbearable for her.

The Harvey Family (Athletes: Kera and Samantha) shares their love one’s story with us:

In Honor of Caren Harvey:

Caren Harvey was first diagnosed with skin cancer during her freshman year of college at Morgan State University in 2000. This was noted as a rare case due to Caren's young age and African-American ethnicity. I had a squamous cell carcinoma tumor in my left leg, which was surgically removed while in its 1st stage. I am grateful that it was caught early and did not spread. I receive yearly dermatologist follow ups and use sun block year round.

Nevertheless, Caren had a dedicated team of dermatologists and a faithful family of supporters to help her fight back. Now 12 years later, Caren is an active duty Army Officer and a mother of three, who is still cancer free!!

The Deas Family (Athletes: Dajuan and Jabari) shares their love one’s story with us:

In Honor of Betty Washington (her words):

In December of 2000, I had my annual mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer. My story actually began in 1962. I had my first of seven fibroid tumors. Each time a lump or tumor was discovered, prior to 2000, it was benign. My assumption this time was this tumor would be benign. The technician came back in the room and told me that she needed to take another picture of my left breast. After she did that she came back and told me that she needed to do an ultrasound. Of course at this point I am becoming quite apprehensive. I was told that I would get the results later. Later that day I received a telephone call from the radiologist advising that I indeed did have breast cancer and an appointment was made to see the surgeon the next morning.

I had my breast removed on Jan 2, 2001. My surgeon said that I had the choice of a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. I choose the former. I was also advised that I did not have to take chemotherapy, but I chose to take it. I was bald for a while (smile), but my hair came back. Thank God, I have been a survivor for almost twelve (12) years.

My Aunt is the lady in the light pink hat.

The Brandon Family (Athletes: Everand, Caleb, Micah, Merryck and Super Charged Allen) shares their love one’s story with us:

In Honor of Baron Duncan, Sr:

Baron was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2007 at the age of 44. He is currently receiving chemotherapy. He has four children and a loving and dedicated girlfriend, Kim, who has sacrificed much to ensure Baron's safety and comfort.  Baron is a lover of music and a master base guitar player. He has rocked many stages with his talent and unique ability to enliven concert goers. He loves the stage! Although this disease has weakened him, during his good days he would have small jam-sessions with close friends. He has the ability to make a bass guitar talk to you!
His passion for music is carried over to his love for his family. He tirelessly took care of his mother, who battled Alzheimer's, until she went home to be with the Lord in 2011. As his father, he shares the same passion for cars, as well as motorcycles. Baron has always been stubborn; thinking that he can do it, he can fix it, etc. This attitude has served him well during this battle with cancer. God's hand on and in his life, and Baron's will to live have kept him thus far.  As a family, we believe the word of the Lord that states "I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging for bread." "By His stripes, we are healed." And, "This sickness is not unto death." In Jesus name!

Baron Duncan lived his life with compassion and dedication. He was a native of Jamaica, West Indies, and the youngest of 9 children. He married the love of his life, Gwieneverea Grayson, in 1960, and they were blessed with two wonderful children, Baron, Jr and Gwieneverea II. He and his family settled in New York where he touched thousands of young people's lives as he helped to guide their educational careers via his academic counseling.

Baron never lost his spirit of endurance. Just as he ran long distance track for Philander Smith College, he ran the good fight of faith and walked in the laws and precepts of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He served as a disciple and pilgrim for the Lord and carried the Good News to those who wanted to hear throughout the United States and the West Indies. His calm, jovial spirit was seen and welcomed by many.

Baron was a lover of people, plants, machinery, musical instruments, and everything that could move with fuel or force. Anything he could fix, he had his hands on; especially antique cars.
Baron was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993. He underwent a radical prostatectomy and was in remission for several years. When the cancer returned, he went through several rounds of chemotherapy, as well as radiation. After over 15 years of fighting, the Lord gave him rest and called him home in 2008. He is missed by many, but he lived his life with excellence, and therefore his example lives in those he touched.

Humbly submitted,
Gwieneverea

The Patterson Family (Athletes: Kiara and Ja’Liyah) shares their love one’s story with us:

My Mother Mrs. Janet Patterson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. It was discovered in its early stages. She had a single mastectomy and underwent treatments of chemotherapy for several months to remove the cancer. My mother is now living cancer free, she is a survivor.

Pre-Workout Snack

Posted by Robert Griffin, Jr at Dec 29, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Hello Five Hills Track and Field Family, Some of you have been asking about a nutritious snack to give your athletes before practice. I have been giving the following snack to my children before their workouts for over a year now and it seems to work. They are full without being cramped and they have the energy to get through the entire practice. PRE-WORKOUT SNACK SMOOTHIE 8-10 FROZEN STRAWBERRIES 1 BANANA 4-6 OZ GRAPE JUICE (100% GRAPE JUICE)* 4 OZ PLAIN NON-FAT YOGURT OR 1 SCOOP 100% WHEY POWDER (VANILLA) BLEND UNTIL SMOOTH. I ALSO RECOMMEND 1-3 OZ ALMONDS (ABOUT A HANDFUL) TO EAT ALONG WITH THE SMOOTHIE *YOU CAN USE YOUR FAVORITE JUICE AS LONG AS ITS 100% JUICE
