Three missed tackles and a saftey helped Mag-39 get their revenge on 11th Marines this past saturday in 29 Palms 24-12. Once again the 11th Marines offense struggled to put point on the board and move the ball converting only two drives into successful TD's while blowing another. The Cannon cockers defense held Mag every step of the way denying the high-powered offense on several occassions by stuffing their run and pass. However three missed tackles allowed the Mag running backs to break free and dash for touchdowns. Scoreing for the Cockers was QB Steven Phelps on a 75 yard QB draw play and the other was Miguel Ortiz on a counter play after LB Scott Cook blocked a punt and returned it 54 yards to the 1 yard line. LB Kevin Schoep also intercepted a pass for the second game in a row giveing him 4 on the season. "We played a heck of a game, our defense was awesome we just didnt wrap up when it counted and gave up our outside contain." said Head Coach Jacob Puda, "The scored board in my mind lied, i know we should have won that game, they know and so do my players, we just need to learn to wrap up, then we'll be ok. We will see them again in the playoffs and we'll be ready." The cannon cockers next game will be Tuesday Nov. 26th at 11 area feild at 1830.

Steven Phelps threw a TD pass on 4th and 9 with less than a minute to go in the game to help the 11th Marine Regiment to a come from behind victory in a never racking, nail bitter at 11 area feild on 13 Nov. Mag managed to gain alot of yards but could punch it in the end zone in 8 opputunities in the red zone comeing away with only two feild goal's and haveing another one blocked. Mag struck first with two feild goals in the first quarter as the cannon cocker struggled to get something going on offense. But in the second half 11th Marines came out and marched down feild and scored on a 12 yard scoreing strike from Phelps to WR Nate Willis and Thomas Prettyman tacked on the extra point attempt. Then in the blink of an eye on Mag's next possession TB Micheal Hegan dashed 68 yards for a TD almost breaking the cannon cockers spirit. On the ensueing posseion Phelps threw an interception that gave Mag the ball with just under 4 minuet's left in the game after a few running plays and a first down the relentless 11th Marine defense rose to the occassion when FS Anthony Parker intercepted a pass and raced 75 yards to the Mag 20 yard line leaveing a 1:25 on the clock. 11th Marines Offense comes alive

Posted by Jacob Puda at Oct 23, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
In the first two games of the season, the 11th Marines offense had kinda struggled to put points on the board even thought they posted just under 400 yds in two games. After a dissapointing loss to Miramar on the 10th the team had two weeks to work on offense and special teams to pre-pare for HQBN. 1st MarDiv. It looked as though the time off did them some good as they came out and hammered down on HQBN 20-0. The Cannon Cockers offense seemed as though they had just woke up comeing out of the gates and racking up just over 300 yards of offense. Steven Phelps passed for two TD's and rushed for another, the first TD pass was to WB Jeremy Shuster on a 5 yd slant. The next was to TE Kevin Schoep for 20 yds. The TD run came late in the 4th on an option play from 3 yds out. Phelps completed 7 of 14 passes for just over a 100 yards. "I just had great protecion from my line, they did a heck of a job blocking and that sprung us this game."Phelps said. The ground game game was lead by FB James Moore who rack up about 102 yards on 14 carries and made many great blocks opening up the holes for TB Micheal Guillory who came away with 73 yards on 7 carries. Also getting in some yards was WB Jeremy Schuster who gain 46 yards on 4 carries and picked up two valuble 1st downs. "All in all i was proud of my offense, espcially the line, they made some great blocks and gave the backs time and space to make things happen." said Head Coach and offensive Coordinator Jacob Puda. For the second time this season the mighty Cannon Cocker defense pitched another shutout holding HQBN. to under 100 yards of total offense for the third game in a row."What can i say, our defense is just flat out the best on base" said Asst. Coach and Defensive Coordinator David Bautistia."Teams know that when they play us that they aren't going to get anywhere or score anything. All-around we just domiate people with our explosive quickness and they way lay the wood on the feild." The next game for the Cannon Cockers will be on 5 November Vs. Mag-39 at 1500 on the 43 Area Feild as they vie for a bid to the best of the west tournament.

Special teams blunders downfall 11th Marines

Posted by Jacob Puda at Oct 9, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Who says Special teams isn't important? Just the name should give it away, when you kick off or punt you try to pin the opposing team as far back as you can. Without a doubt special teams is the one of the most important keys to winning a football game. This was eveident in the 11th Marines loss on 10 October at the 11 Area football feild to Miramar 16-6. With the offense struggling and the defense playing it hearts out the team fumbled two snaps on punt to give Miramar great feild position on the Cannon Cockers own 10 yard line. Miramar capitilized on thoes mistakes and put up two TD's on their way to a heart breaking win. Once again the blistering defense held Miramar to less then 100 yards of total offense. "I was pretty worried the whole game" said Miramar coach Richard Mahoney, "I didnt think we were going to score on them, their defense was just spectacular and fortunately for us their offense struggled and they gave us good feild position on thoes two fumbled punts." The Cannon Cockers scored first on a 60 yard TD pass from QB Steven Phelps to WR Darren White. "I had good protection that play and i kinda threw it a little ahead of him" said Phelps."But he made a great adjustment to the ball." The conversion failed and left the score 6-0. The rest of the game both offense's struggled to put points up until the late in the 3rd quarter when 11th Marines fumbled a snap on the punt and turned it over to the defending champs on the 10 yard line. Three plays later Miramar punched it in on a QB bootleg and followed it up with a 2-point conversion to go ahead 8-6. The cannon cockers rallied down to the Miramar 30 yard line but fumbled the ball away. After another defensive stand the team took over on their own 40 but were plaigued by penelties and were forced into a 4th a very long, they chose to punt and fumbled the ball once more giveing Miramar a short feild once again from the 10 yard line. The champs took advatage once more by pounding in another touchdown and 2-point conversion which put the game out of reach 16-6. "when you give a team like Miramar 10 yards to work with they are going to score." head coach jacob puda said."Our defense really played hard to keep us in the game but our offense just wasnt there tonight, but i do believe we should have won that game, they know it, I know it and so do my players." Alot of contoversy was with the offcials, witch weren't the pick of the litter, at times people even wondered if they knew what they were doing. Never the less the game would end 16-6 and the team suffered their first loss. "I think it was an eye opener for our guys" said Asst. Coach David Bautistia. "This was a good loss for us, now we know what needs more work, but more importantly our guys know now that practice time isnt a time to mess around, i think they'll take things more serious now." The Cannon Cockers next game will be Thursday October 24th against Hq.Bn. 1st MarDiv at 1830 on the 11 Area Feild.
