Penguins split opening weekend
Jeff NovakStaff Writer
The Plymouth-Canton-Salem Penguin girls’ varsity hockey team hopes to prove that last year’s run to the state semifinals wasn’t a fluke.Last year, despite a paltry 3-15-0 regular season record, the PCS Penguins stormed through the playoffs before losing to Cranbrook Kingswood, 1-0, in the semifinals.Lori Callahan, in her fourth year as head coach, will have her work cut out for her with a young team that boasts only four seniors, no juniors, eight sophomores and three freshmen.“We’re a young team and don’t have a lot of experience, but they work hard,” she said. “I’m pretty pleased with the effort so far. I expect good things this year. We were young and inexperienced last year and we made it to the final four. We want to make it back there.”All four of the seniors were on the squad last year and they know how to win.Seniors Kelsey Nikkila (Salem) and Katie Rokakis (Canton) are back to lead the offense as forwards. Chelsea Osburn (Canton) will anchor the defense and Michelle Shaffer (Plymouth) is back between the pipes for the Penguins.Sophomore forwards Jennifer Fedon (Canton) and Lauren Smith ((Plymouth) will help up front on the attack and Sophomores Jessie Hazlett (Salem) and Sarah Coleman (Canton) have a year under their belts on defense.Newcomers include sophomore forwards Victoria Campbell (Plymouth), Amanda Heisler (Salem) and Rebecca Majszak (Canton) and sophomore defender Rhianna Fleisher (Plymouth).
Freshman forwards include Anne Distlerath (Canton) and Ellexus Montoya (Plymouth). This year Callahan will have a luxury she hasn’t had before—two goalies. Shaffer will switch off with freshman Emily Bullock.“I need to recruit somebody to keep track of shots on net,” Callahan said. “I’ve never had to worry about that before. Now I have to see who plays better against which teams. It’s nice to have that.”Bullock was already tested on Friday when the team traveled to Ann Arbor to face Pioneer. The Penguins lost, 4-0, but Callahan gave Bullocks high marks for her effort.“She was phenomenal,” Callahan said. “Ann Arbor is a pretty strong team and they really out shot us. Emily made a lot of stops—the score could have been a lot worse.”The Penguins had a better outcome against host Northville B team at the Novi Ice Arena on Saturday.PCS won the bout, 8-1. The Penguins had a 4-0 lead at the end of two periods.Newcomer Heisler proved her worth with two goals in the rout to lead the team.Smith Osburn, Campbell, Coleman, Rokakis and Fedon all scored single goals in the outing. Shaffer earned the win in net.PCS head to Northville at the Novi Ice Arena at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.http://www.journalgroup.com/Sports/8827
