The Littleton High School Junior Varsity Hockey team has begun its 2002-2003 season and is being coached by Karl Austermann and assisted by Al Aponas. The team is comprised of students from Littleton High School (Littleton) and Bromfield High School (Harvard). The JV got the season off on a strong note, registering a 3-1 win against Nashoba Tech in their home opener, and a 3-3 tie against a tough Lunenburg team. LHS got off to a fast start in their home opener at the Groton rink on 12/22, with a goal in the opening minute, scored by Sophomore center Andrew Aponas, assisted by Mike Knox and Mike Dargin. Littleton kept control of the play for most of the period, but with some misplays in their own end, gave up a tying goal that beat goaltender Pete Harvey. LHS came out with ready to go in the 2nd period, and got a nifty goal which proved to be the game winner, by Freshman center Bryan Takvorian on a nice steal at the blue line and then broke in alone and put away a shot to the Tech goalies glove side. LHS got an insurance goal in the 3rd from Freshman defenseman Mike Dargin, assisted by Tom Page and Damian Perry. Littleton fought off any further Nashoba Tech pressure to preserve the 3-1 win. In the second contest, played on Thursday, 12/26, LHS JV again struck first on a second period goal by Mike Knox, assisted by Andrew Aponas. When Lunenburg tied it up, back came the Tigers on a goal Tom Page, assisted by Jamie Newcombe and Eric Cash. LHS added another goal in the third period, this time by Tom Taylor, assisted by Andrew Aponas. The 3-1 margin didn't last long as Lunenburg fought back, with two late game goals. The game-tyer came with just one second left on the clock afterthey had pulled their goalie with six skaters on the ice. The JV hockey team is providing a strong showing and should prove to build as they season progresses. With an away game on December 29th at Oakmont, the next home game will be against Groton, 01/12, at 7pm. /Rich Takvorian
