Gentlemen (And Ladies!), The Winner Is...!!!

Finally, here are the results, in short summary, of the MVP balloting that took place recently in which most of you participated. A special thanks to all who voted by replying to my repeated e-mail messages (remember, tournament MVPs will still be selected using our time-honored offensive points system). Fifteen Heavy Metal Softball regular members were eligible to vote this time, having participated in the Tulare City, Thursday Night, spring 2005 league. In order of highest cumulative point total, with adjoining number of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place votes, here is this league's MVP and the rest of the worthy contenders:

League MVP: Frank Fletcher (37 total points -- 6 first place votes, 2 second place votes, 1 third place vote. Your all-around team effort and attitude always puts you in contention, good buddy!)

1st Runner-Up: Wes Avery (24 total points -- 2 first place votes, 4 second place votes, 2 third place votes. Good goin', big guy!)

2nd Runner-Up: Vern Amaro (14 total points -- 4 second place votes, 2 third place votes. To those who voted for me -- thanks!)

3rd Runner-Up: Art Tabacco (13 total points -- 2 first place votes, 3 third place votes. Great offensive/defensive effort!)

4th Runner-Up: Mike Lujan, Donny Aguiar (5 total points, tie -- 1 first place vote. Both of your efforts were very appreciated!)

5th Runner-Up: Rich Avery, Gene Hitt (3 total points, tie -- 1 second place vote. Take a bow, boys!)

6th Runner-Up: Lee Garcia, Manuel Romeiro (2 total points, tie -- 2 third place votes. Explosive start at the beginning of the league, Lee! Your unselfish team effort, Manuel, did not go unrecognized! Also, our team is fortunate to have not one, but two, fine pitchers.)

In the interest of integrity and not wanting to violate any trust, I kept meticulous records of all the oral and online ballots that I received from the 12 regular members who decided to vote. Despite repeated reminders and for reasons of their own, Adam Goltz and Kurt Chambers did not give me any responses and, thus, did not affect any of the above results, though they remained eligible to receive MVP votes and have them posted. Cruz Onsurez declined to vote, stating he did not play enough games to make a fair decision; he also remained eligible to receive MVP votes and have them posted. Once again, let these be some words of warning: Rule #1 -- If a player decides not to participate in the balloting to determine our league MVP, he will remain unqualified to receive this honor, despite perhaps receiving the most cumulative points (the honor will be bestowed upon the next eligible player in line). This rule has been instituted to enforce fairness with the outcome of the voting -- in other words, as you give, so shall you receive. Two other rules also affect a player's MVP eligibility: Rule #2 -- At least half the games of a league/tournament must be played; and Rule #3 -- The agreed-upon league/tournament participation fee must be paid. I'm sure everyone can see the need for such rules. I, myself, voted for who I thought were three deserving men. Because I am the ballot collector and, also, because the results could possibly hinge upon my final selections, I always believe it is wise to make clear my own personal choices for MVP, hopefully without offending any of my other close friends on the team, who already know that only three choices can be given. My votes, in order, were: Frank Fletcher (1st place vote); Wes Avery (2nd place vote); and Manuel Romeiro (3rd place vote). I will not give any specific reasons for my choices (none of us have to), but I will say that I really appreciated these men for the contributions they made during this league. In all actuality, everyone on this team is deemed valuable, both on and off the field. I hope all of you will understand this personal feeling of mine, and why I have such a difficult time revealing my selections. But I feel I must. No other selections from specific team members will be revealed unless one of you is curious and wants to inquire, in which case, I'll gladly let you know. And to the six people who gave me consideration this time around, once more, a sincere thanks to all of you.

And that's a wrap for now, folks....
Some Bragging Rights From Our 2005 Tulare City League Campaign!!!

At the end of each league season, some recognition is always given to those individuals who contributed to the team in some way. The following categories -- most real, some intended for a few laughs -- are mostly from the offensive part of softball; some are just plain offensive! (Have a little sense of humor, guys! Don't get defensive. Get it -- "defensive"! Oh, never mind....) So, for what it's worth, here we go:

Tulare City League, Thursday Night, spring 2005
6-2-2 record: 1st place!!! (championship shirts)

Most Single-Game Points: Frank Fletcher (28)

Most Offensive Points: Frank Fletcher (134)

DEFENSIVE CATEGORIES --

Most Put-Outs: Gene Hitt (33)

Most Defensive Points: Gene Hitt (32 -- 33 put-out pts. plus 3 assist pts. minus 4 error pts.) (Reminder: +1 point for a put-out, +1 point for an assist, -2 points for each error. In other words, errors "take away" from your overall offensive/defensive effort!)

All of which leads to, if the above stats were used primarily in making our choices...

Most Valuable Player (Tulare City League, Thursday Night, spring 2005): Frank Fletcher (37 total points; by team ballot vote)

And for our "special" categories...

Most Non-Appearances (regular members): Kurt Chambers (7) (Does anyone remember this guy? I wrote his name a few times near the beginning of the league season.... Adam was a close second, with 5; Lee took third, with 2. Some others also were considered, even though their physical bodies actually made it to the games!)

Perfect Attendance (regular members): Donny Aguiar, Vern Amaro, Rich Avery, Frank Fletcher, Gene Hitt, Art Tabacco, Nelson Vieira, and, of course, our team statistician/photographer, Jerry Amaro (All 10 games; gold stars to all of you!)

Most Memorable Performance: Lee Garcia (Before dealing with an abrupt change in job situation, Lee was batting .929 through the first four league games, going 13 for 14, with 4 singles, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HRs, 10 RBIs, 5 runs, 3 bonus points (one 4/4 game), plus a fielding average of 1.000 (6 put-outs, 5 assists, 0 errors) for 72 total offensive/defensive points. All I can say is that I can't remember a more productive four-game stretch by anyone on this team in the 15 years it has been in existence. If he did not miss almost three complete games in the following six, I dare say he might have left quite a team mark to shoot for, far surpassing the team record for total points in a league campaign. I've always appreciated your efforts and contributions, good buddy -- how about trying to duplicate things during a ten-game Visalia fall league stretch! What do you say? Just try not to damage too many vehicles in the process!)

Greatest Increase in Batting Average from Last League (Visalia, 2004; minimum 5 games): Vern Amaro (+.089, from .588 to .677) (Lee Garcia came in second with a +.081 increase -- good job, buddy!)

Biggest "Plunge" in Batting Average from Last League (Visalia, 2004; minimum 5 games): Adam Goltz (-.159, from .548 to .389) (Manuel Romeiro came in second with a -.081 decrease -- not quite enough to wrest the title from Adam, if that's really what you wanted!)

Best Player Quote: "Go say hello to 'Uncle' Art!" (Nelson Vieira to his son, Joshua, in a kidding gesture one night -- who knows, he could have psychic ability!)

Best Acting Performance by a Player/Manager: Drum roll, please...Vern Amaro!!! (4th time in a row! A four-peat! Incredible! Can this person run the career table! This is for impersonating, once again, the second baseman/shortstop/catcher -- and spokesperson -- of a pretty darn-good softball team! By the way, were there any other eligible candidates on the team?)

"100 Points Plus Club" (New!): Vern Amaro (1994 T.C.L. 130 pts./1999 T.C.L. 109 pts./2001 T.C.L. 103 pts./2002 T.C.L. 140 pts./2003 T.C.L. 106 pts./2004 T.C.L. 110 pts./2005 T.C.L. 103 pts.); Rich Avery (2000 T.C.L. 129 pts./2004 V.C.L. 102 pts.); Wes Avery (2005 T.C.L. 129 pts.); Matt Beltran (1999 T.C.L. 104 pts.); Gordon Caudle (2000 T.C.L. 120 pts.); Kurt Chambers (2004 T.C.L. 100 pts.); Frank Fletcher (1994 T.C.L. 115 pts./1999 T.C.L. 169 pts. [record]/2000 T.C.L. 134 pts./2002 T.C.L. 146 pts./2003 T.C.L. 113 pts./2004 T.C.L. 111 pts./2004 V.C.L. 112 pts./2005 T.C.L. 134 pts.); Gene Hitt (1994 T.C.L. 108 pts./2000 T.C.L. 138 pts./2002 T.C.L. 121 pts./2005 T.C.L. 100 pts.); Rene Regalado (1999 T.C.L. 109 pts./2000 T.C.L. 120 pts.); John Souza (1994 T.C.L. 122 pts.); Nelson Vieira (2002 T.C.L. 114 pts./2004 T.C.L. 112 pts.)

Heavy Metal Softball rocks!!! First place! You've been a great bunch of guys to play side-by-side with, men! All kidding aside, I was really proud of our efforts, most especially the consistent team attitude displayed. I tip my cap off to all of you, as I know some of you come to play despite conflicting personal schedules, various aches and pains, balancing family and friends, and putting up with my managerial decisions. Y'all ready for more in the fall Visalia league? I'll see what I can stir up and let you know at a later date. In the meantime...keep rockin', guys!
A Long-Sought Original Creation Finally Found!!!

For those who are new to our team, Heavy Metal Softball was founded in 1990 by brothers Vernon and Jerry Amaro, with the express purpose of having an athletic outlet to participate in with close friends and family members. Over the years, Heavy Metal Softball has proven to be a consistent winner, in both leagues and tournaments, with several original members still actively playing. In other words, a lot has transpired since that earlier, more naive, time. Most of us then were young, hungry to prove ourselves, and just simply wanted to play softball at a reasonably competitive level, which we did by winning many league championships in a row. As a matter of fact, we didn't lose a league championship until 1996, when we played in a very competitive Division 2 league (when the Tulare Recreation Department actually ranked its divisions). Initially starting in Division 10, we had slowly worked our way up to the higher levels of league play, according to the rules at that time (in contrast to today's Tulare league atmosphere where everyone just pins their team card to a night of choice on the "organization" board!) After 1996, we disbanded a few years for various reasons -- some physical, some directional, some because we were finding new avenues, new circles, to compete in. I, myself, became part of traveling tournament team and, thus, found I had little time for managing my own team. But because I missed that pure, unadulterated love of playing together as a team of just good friends, I started Heavy Metal Softball again in 1999, and we have been having another run of successful good times ever since. Now what does all of this have to do with our original team logo, you say? Well, for me, it all comes down to what the initial intent was for forming our team -- first, spending time with friends and family; second, playing hard for ourselves and each other (remember practices!); and last, seeing how we all would grow, not just team-wise, but eventually as mature men. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this simple -- yet sincere -- hand-drawn logo symbolizes for me my lost youth, a few almost-forgotten old faces, as well as the humble beginnings of what became a real team, and my nostalgic longing to find it was finally fulfilled when my brother e-mailed its image to me quite some time ago. He said that he had found it in a folder of old drawings while cleaning out a desk in his garage. What he didn't know was that he had opened up a doorway to the past, bringing back a more fresh and innocent time for me, and for that, I thank him immensely once again....

Just Me And The Boys!

From time to time, faces come and go on a softball team -- some just never leave! But if a team has what some call a good player chemistry, the same faces end up year after year on the team's official team picture. It is my wish that this year's current members continue to play side-by-side with me well into my twilight years -- being one of the oldest active players on our roster, that's not leaving too many years left, if you know what I mean! But kidding about my age aside, I would rather play with these guys until that time finally comes to say, "I love it, but it's time to leave it." In closing, I just want to say one more thing: You guys are great! I now present to you Heavy Metal Softball's 2005 Edition:

(Front row, kneeling, left to right): Frank Fletcher, Gene Hitt, Lee Garcia, Vern Amaro, Adam Goltz, Art Tabacco (Back row, standing, left to right): Donny Aguiar, Rich Avery, Manuel Romeiro, Kurt Chambers, Nelson Vieira   (2010 members missing in action): Wes Avery, Mike Lujan, Steve Stafford, Joaquin Perez, Brian Hollingshead, Lucio Cobos, and Johnny Lopez   image
Smiles All Around At Recent Award Presentation!!!

On Sunday, March 6th, at Tulare's Round Table Pizza, our second annual team organizational meeting was held to begin the 2005 softball year -- an initial kick-off before our first team activities take off in the Central California ASA Rec. Series and the city's spring men's league. Near the end of our agenda that evening, Lee Garcia was presented with the coveted Heavy Metal Softball "Circle of Honor" MVP plaque and the 1st place trophy from our previous stint last year in Visalia's fall 2004 men's league. Here he is, with team manager, Vern Amaro, in front of our now ever-present team fence banner, receiving his just rewards. MVP! MVP! MVP! -- you deserve it, tough guy!
