2013 week 8

Posted by Jerry Randolph on Oct 12 2013 at 05:00PM PDT

Week 8 for the Vikings was a good one.

The Vikings only had 1 game this week hosting the Troy Trojans on their Senior Night. They celebrated Patrick Zengel, Ibrahim Alsalhi, and Wyatt Reeser. The starting 11 was Roark in goal, Cardenas, Zech, Bussard, and Reeser on defense, Schacherer, Affini, Eshbaugh, and Schenck at midfield, Alsalhi, and Teaney up top. Patrick Zengel was unable to play unfortunately on senior night due to a season ending injury earlier in the year. The play began with the Trojans trying to establish their dominance and prove they deserve the #4 tournament ranking. The play was mostly in the Vikings half with an occasional counter attack from Alsalhi. The Vikings were trying to establish their quick passing game but Troy’s pressure kept them from sustaining possession long enough  to gain an advantage. Just 5 minutes into the match the pressure paid off for the Trojans and they scored to make the game 1-0.  The Vikings however did not put their heads down and quit. They rallied around their seniors and dug in not letting Troy have the momentum. The play evened out with the Vikings gaining the possession and Troy content to play the ball long hoping to outrun the Defense. Roark had 8 saves in the first half to hold the score line. A penalty kick was awarded to Troy in the first half but the player could not keep his shot on frame. This motivated the Vikings and they established more pressure on the defense of Troy putting several shots on frame and challenging the keeper. None would fall and the score at half remained 1-0 Troy. Coach Randolph in his halftime speech told his players to man mark better. He felt they had a couple of good players we needed to tighten up on and quit letting them see the ball so often. He also pointed out they want to play long ball and all we need to do is pass and possess and keep shooting on frame to tie the game up and eventually take the lead. Many players commented that we are a better team than them and we just needed to score. The second half began with the Vikings putting pressure on Troy and them clearing the ball for a counter attack. Both teams were very good and playing their own game. Vikings possessing and Troy putting ball long and counter attacking on the outsides. The Vikings got their break when Alsalhi was taken down in the box and a penalty kick awarded to them. Sophomore Mason Schacherer had been asking his coach for an opportunity to take one and his coach awarded him. Schacherer placed a well taken shot into the left side netting to easily beat the keeper and tie the game 1-1. The Remaining 20 minutes of the game was an intense one with the Vikings really stepping up and wanting the win and Troy bending but not breaking. Both teams had great chances to score. Troy found the net with less than 10 minutes to play but the Viking defense had put the player off sides and the goal was disallowed. The Vikings pushed hard the last 10 minutes and had several shots but could not find the net. The game ended 1-1 with a good feeling of playing well by both teams. Good games were had by Schacherer, Roark, Zech, Bussard , Reeser, Alsalhi,  Eshbaugh, Siroki, and Affini.

The JV squad finished up their season with a 3-12-0 record . The young squad played well and learned a great deal that will help each player in years to come on the Varsity field.
