Chief Scalps Dominican Republic

Posted by Joseph O'Hara at Mar 5, 2003 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Looking for some added pop to the lineup and some specialists in the bullpen, Al Thomas manager and GM, Joe "Chief" O'Hara recently returned from a scouting trip to Cheeneeahanatu in the Dominican Republic. Chief was scheduled to have lunch with Pedro Martinez when he arrived in the country, but Petey wasn't home. Thinking quickly, the A's GM quickly hired a local transportation consultant to help him locate and evaluate potential diamonds in the rough. Approximately 27 athletes from the Kahlua Region tried out for a position with the Athletics, but only 3 were offered contracts. Their names are being withheld until Visa clarification has been achieved, but rumor has it the players are an infielder, and outfielder, and a relief pitcher, all over 6 foot 3 with swimming pools and beautiful sisters. More to follow.....image

Lucey Heads to Big Apple

Posted by Joseph O'Hara at Dec 22, 2002 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Al Thomas pitcher/firstbaseman Tim Lucey will not be with the team for the 2003 season. Lucey has been traded to the Yokamuri Goats of the Desert Tundra League for a barrel of seeds, a huge tin of Cope, a butler, 50 White Russians and a tuna fish sandwich with potato chips. After struggling early in the 2002 season, Lucey hit .351 over the last month of the summer to lead the team down the stretch. Tabbed "Mouse" by his peers around the league, his game is personified by his quiet, shy demeanor on the field. The A's will also have to throw in a player (OR COACH) to be named later in the deal....
The Al Thomas A's sent 3 players to the YBL All Star game at Fenway Park on August 13, and all three contributed nicely to the Stewart Division's victory. Aidan Powers, Chris Malloy and Steve Sherman were voted by the team as the 2002 representatives at the summer classic. Powers (last year's starting pitcher at Fenway) pitched a scoreless inning, Sherman was plunked twice and Malloy garnered MVP honors with a bomb into the screens, a fitting performance witnessed by the 30 friends and family members who came to see him play.image
The Al THomas A's struggled to find the right mix of talent and leadership throughout the first half of the season. With so many new faces, the first month or so was spent trying players at different positions. Experimentation came at a price, though, as the A's soon found themselves at the basement of the division at 4-8-1. As the players familiarized themselves with one another, the team's attitude improved, and the A's went on to win 12 of their last 18 games to grab the last playoff spot. The playoffs proved to be painfull as the clun ran into 3-time defending juggernaut Somerville, who neatly dispatched the A's in 3 games. The series loss was tough, but many members of the team looked back on the great second half of the season, and looked forward to the future with sincere optimism.
