Astros lose lead in last inning

Posted by Ken St.Aubin at Oct 14, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Astros played a scoreless battle with the Rockies for 4 innings to forge ahead 3 - 1 going to the last inning. With a few untimely errors, and leaving many runners stranded on base fell on the short side of the score, 5 - 3 to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Garrett Hester pitched 3 excellent innings and got hurt by errors in the 6th that cost the Astros victory. This was one that got away but shouldn't have as we all left the field stunned. David Freudenberger came in to close us down in the bottom of the 6th.

Astros beat pesky Cards

Posted by Ken St.Aubin at Oct 11, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Astros had a tough game at high noon on Saturday vs the Cardinals and won 7 - 5. With the game being close most of the game, the Astros pulled ahead in the 4th inning to get a 7 - 3 lead going to the Cardinals last at bat. After a couple hits and walks, the Cardinals pulled within 2 and had the tieing runs at 2nd and 3rd base with no outs. In comes Mark Robichau and with his strong arm and somewhat awkward motion kept throwing strikes and struck out the top 3 players in the Cardinals lineup to earn the save. Outstanding effort in a difficult situation. Joe Silver started the game at pitcher and added 2 crushing hits to continue his hot hitting streak, but earned an early exit from the game by unfortunately throwing the bat and hitting the umpire (Twice). Good pitching by both Joe and Aaron of 2 innings each.

Astros win after long rain delays

Posted by Ken St.Aubin at Oct 10, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Astros got back to playing baseball on Friday night after a 1 week layoff due to rain and beat the Cubs 7 - 3. After falling behind, 3 - 2 and going in to their last at bat, the Astros refused to make an out and scored 5 times and had 2 runners on base when time ran out. Chris St.Aubin scored 3 of the Astros runs and made several good plays at home plate as catcher. Excellent pitching by Karl Pringle and 4 innings of relief by Garrett Hester held the Cubs most of the night. Nnamdi made outs from 3rd base in each of the 6 innings played and Brooks Kelm scooped up several tough throws at 1st base to preserve outs on infield hits. Excellent comeback and refusing to die in the last inning.

Comeback falls short

Posted by Ken St.Aubin at Oct 3, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Astros lost a tough game vs the Cardinals on Friday night 8 - 7 . After a shaky 6 -1 deficit at the start aided by a few errors, Garrett Hester and Dylan Hickey pitched well in relief to give the Astros a chance. In falling behind early and showing little offense, the Astros scored 5 times in the last inning but fell 1 run short in their comeback. Nnamdi Dikes hit a 2 run HR in the last inning to close the gap. The 1st round of games is over with an average 2 - 2 - 1 record thus far. We look forward towards improvement during the next round of games.

Excellent play in the 1st inning with a fly ball catch in center by Brooks Kelm, relay to Mark Robichau at SS and a throw to Joe Silver at home who blocked the plate and got the runner tagging up from 3rd. Karl Pringle hit his 1st HR as an Astro and pitched 2 strong innings. The Astros gave the Pirates a continual different look by using 5 pitchers in the game; Karl, Nnamdi, Harrison, Mark and Dylan to close. Mike Whitmeyer got his 1st hit with 2 outs which opened the door for an additional 4 runs in the 3rd inning.
