HHS DEFEATS FRIENDSHIP CHRISTIAN 4-2

Posted by Andy Gilley at Apr 15, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Commandos stepped outside of district play to face long-time rival Friendship Christian on Thursday night and HHS came away with the 4-2 win.

It was a back and forth game early on as both teams had the majority of their combined 17 hits over the first three innings.

Junior right-hander Brandon Tucker pitched out of jams in the first three innings before settling in to pick up his 4th win of the year.  Tucker scattered 9 hits over 6 innings of work while striking out 7 and allowing two runs.  He was at his best in the 5th and 6th innings when he got 4 of his 7 strikeouts.

Reid Nelson had a big day at the plate.  Nelson led off with a double and added two more hits on the day while scoring two runs.  Hayden Layne picked up his 27th and 28th RBIs of the year as well.

With the win HHS improves to 18-3 overall.  The Commandos will next be back in action in District 9AAA play as they travel to Mt Juliet on Tuesday night to face the league leading Bears.

HHS DEFEATS BEECH 10-0

Posted by Andy Gilley at Apr 11, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Commandos defeated the Buccaneers 10-0 to get the series sweep.

Cameron Hansen picked up his 5th win of the year on the mound going all six innings allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4.  The Commando defense helped his cause by turning two double plays and with a spectacular fifth inning play by Austin Mays.

Offensively the Commandos were led by Senior Brett Coker who had two hits, including a three-run homer in the top of the third that essentially put the game out of reach.   Coker also added a sacrifice fly to drive in 4 runs on the day.  Reid Nelson also had two hits and two runs as did Austin Mays.

With the win HHS improves to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in District 9AAA.  The Commandos will next play in non-district action over the weekend against long-time rivals Friendship Christian on Thursday night and Overton on Saturday.

HHS DEFEATS BEECH 1-0

Posted by Andy Gilley at Apr 10, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Commandos got a no-hitter from Hayden Mullins that was much needed as HHS defeated Beech 1-0.

Mullins was outstanding on the mound in picking up his second win of the year.  The junior struck out 15 and walked just one in throwing his first career varsity no-hitter.

Beech pitcher Seth Marlin was equal to Mullins for the majority of the game.  Marlin kept the Commandos off balance all night long until the bottom of the 4th when Hayden Layne broke through with the game's first hit.  He was left stranded on the bases.

The Commandos finally broke through on Marlin in the bottom of the 5th.  A single from Nate Vaughn was followed by a single from Austin Mays.  Courtesey runner Matthew Dorris came all the way around to score when Mays ball was misplayed in right field.  This gave the Commandos a 1-0 lead.

Mullins took it from there, striking out 4 of the last six hitters to get the no-hitter.  It was also Mullins second shutout of the year.

With the win HHS improves to 16-3 on the year and 6-1 in District 9AAA.  The Commandos will next play at Beech on Wednesday night at 7:00.

TENNESSEAN ARTICLE ON CAMERON HANSEN

Posted by Andy Gilley at Apr 8, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Cameron Hansen gives Hendersonville baseball dominant pitching depth

Anthony Mazzolini, The Tennessean Published 8:50 a.m. CT April 9, 2018

The arc, the placement and the speed — Hansen's out-pitch has it all.

"He's got one that can make a hitter look sick at the plate," said Hendrix, the Commandos' head man and a recent Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee.

Though attention is often pointed the way of fellow Hendersonville junior Hayden Mullins, Prep Baseball Report's No. 1 ranked left-handed pitcher in Tennessee for the class of 2019, Hansen may give the Commandos the best No. 2 option at pitcher in the state. The 6-foot-4 righty with a fastball that touches 90 has college scouts salivating and has drawn scholarship offers from around the SEC.

And the scary thing is he's only getting better.

Hansen, whom Prep Baseball Report ranks as the No. 2 RHP of 2019 in the state, spent the offseason working on his changeup to add a third plus pitch to his repertoire. He's found the confidence to deploy it when needed this season.

"More movement and more control, so I'm able to throw it for strikes," Hansen explained the changes to his changeup. "I've been working on improving my control all around this year over past years."

It's showing. In Hansen's first three starts, all wins, he's yet to allow an earned run. He's struck out 17 batters in 18 innings pitched overall with two complete games.

That's not to say his performances were sub-par a year ago. As a sophomore he posted a 1.22 ERA with 57 Ks in 45 2/3 innings pitched. That's when college programs really started to take notice.

Hansen could join his Hendersonville teammate Mullins — who rightfully catches headlines after his 83 strikeouts and 0.70 ERA last season — at Auburn in two years should he accept the program's offer. But he also holds offers from Mississippi State, Tennessee and Missouri.

Where Mullins announced his pick last November, Hansen is in no hurry to decide where he'll spend his college days. He'll wait until he's had a chance to take all his official visits this spring to make a decision.

He's looking for a place with a history of developing pitchers, but also a roster fit that would allow him to see the field soon.

"A good reputation for pitchers, but I also want to play early once I go there," he said. "I don't really want to sit. It'd be better for me to go to a juco than sit out for two years and start my junior year."

The righty has nearly two full seasons left in a Hendersonville uniform first though, giving him plenty of time snap off those dancing curves of coach Hendrix's liking.
