Cameron Hansen gives Hendersonville baseball dominant pitching depth

Anthony Mazzolini, The Tennessean Published 8:50 a.m. CT April 9, 2018

The arc, the placement and the speed — Hansen's out-pitch has it all.

"He's got one that can make a hitter look sick at the plate," said Hendrix, the Commandos' head man and a recent Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee.

Though attention is often pointed the way of fellow Hendersonville junior Hayden Mullins, Prep Baseball Report's No. 1 ranked left-handed pitcher in Tennessee for the class of 2019, Hansen may give the Commandos the best No. 2 option at pitcher in the state. The 6-foot-4 righty with a fastball that touches 90 has college scouts salivating and has drawn scholarship offers from around the SEC.

And the scary thing is he's only getting better.

Hansen, whom Prep Baseball Report ranks as the No. 2 RHP of 2019 in the state, spent the offseason working on his changeup to add a third plus pitch to his repertoire. He's found the confidence to deploy it when needed this season.

"More movement and more control, so I'm able to throw it for strikes," Hansen explained the changes to his changeup. "I've been working on improving my control all around this year over past years."

It's showing. In Hansen's first three starts, all wins, he's yet to allow an earned run. He's struck out 17 batters in 18 innings pitched overall with two complete games.

That's not to say his performances were sub-par a year ago. As a sophomore he posted a 1.22 ERA with 57 Ks in 45 2/3 innings pitched. That's when college programs really started to take notice.

Hansen could join his Hendersonville teammate Mullins — who rightfully catches headlines after his 83 strikeouts and 0.70 ERA last season — at Auburn in two years should he accept the program's offer. But he also holds offers from Mississippi State, Tennessee and Missouri.

Where Mullins announced his pick last November, Hansen is in no hurry to decide where he'll spend his college days. He'll wait until he's had a chance to take all his official visits this spring to make a decision.

He's looking for a place with a history of developing pitchers, but also a roster fit that would allow him to see the field soon.

"A good reputation for pitchers, but I also want to play early once I go there," he said. "I don't really want to sit. It'd be better for me to go to a juco than sit out for two years and start my junior year."

The righty has nearly two full seasons left in a Hendersonville uniform first though, giving him plenty of time snap off those dancing curves of coach Hendrix's liking.
