February 2015 Game Results

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Feb 2, 2015 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

February 27, Friday, Baytown Sterling High School

Clear Lake 55 - Port Arthur Memorial 47

In the second round of Region III playoffs (Area round) Clear Lake faced District 21-6A second place finisher Port Arthur Memorial High School. It was a close game with Lake ahead most of the time but there were several tied scores and Memorial led a few times in the third quarter. At the end of 3 quarters Lake trailed by 1, 35-34.

In the final period it was tied at 42 with 3:20 remaining in the game. Then Lake took a narrow lead and would never relinquish it.

Bradley George was a perfect 9 for 9 from the free throw line and led all scorers with 26 points. As a team Lake shot 17 of 21 free throws (81%).

As of February 27, 2015, Clear Lake's record is 31-2 (one of the four best season records among the state's 6A schools). This is the second best season record in the history of Clear Lake High School.  Only the 1981 Lake team had a better record.

Clear Lake is ranked 5th in the Texas state coaches ranking (TABC, 2-23-15).

February 24, Tuesday 8pm, Manvel High School

Clear Lake 61 - Alief Elsik 51

In the first round of Region III playoffs Clear Lake faced District 23-6A fourth place finisher Alief Elsik High School. It was a close game with Lake ahead most of the time but there were several tied scores and Elsik led a couple of times in the third quarter. It was a one point game at the start of the fourth quarter but Lake never trailed in the final period. Really good defense from Elsik and excellent rebounding kept Elsik in the game and forced the number of Lake turnovers to almost double our average per game (9). Lake's good free throw shooting down the stretch made the difference. Lake shot only 3 free throws in the first half but shot 20 in the second half (16 of 23 for 69.6%).

Bradley George led all scorers with 22. Chris West contributed 20.

As of February 25, 2015, Clear Lake's record is 30-2 (one of the four best season records among the state's 6A schools). That is a 93.75% win rate. This is the second best season record in the history of Clear Lake High School.  Only the 1981 team had a better record.

Clear Lake is ranked 5th in the Texas state coaches ranking (TABC, 2-23-15).

February 17, Tuesday night, Krueger Field House

Clear Lake defeats Clear Creek 58-53 to claim district co-championship

In the final district 24-6A game of the 2014-2015 season, the stage was set for the big showdown between district first place Clear Creek and second place Clear Lake. Lake's only defeat in district play was a 58-54 loss to Creek on January 23 in the Carlisle Field House at Clear Creek High School. Because of this loss, #6 state ranked Clear Lake would have to defeat #3 state ranked Creek if they wanted to share the district championship. A win for Lake by 4 points or more would also give Clear Lake the #1 seed in the bidistrict playoffs against the District 23-6A Fort Bend and Alief schools. In other words, there was a lot on the line and it all came down to the last game of the regular season. In the regular season before playoffs, it can't get any better than that in high school basketball.

The atmosphere was electric as the mostly packed Field House filled with fans anticipating a great basketball game. It was reminiscent of the old days when arch rivals Lake and Creek met to do battle for the district's bragging rights. Even the stifling hot gym was like it used to be in the Krueger era!  Several former players and a former college teammate of Coach Penders had traveled some distance to witness this very special Clear Lake team.

A fired up Lake student section packed with eager young fans who came out to cheer their team to victory energized the Lake squad from the starting tipoff. The first 3 or 4 minutes were required to work out the jitters of both squads before they settled down and played basketball the way they knew they could. At the close of the first quarter Lake led 12-11. With just over 5 minutes remaining in the first half a 3 pointer by Orion Lewis made it 18-14 for Lake. Lake did not relinquish the lead from this point although it was a very close game for the remainder. A layup from the left side by Chris West made it 20-14. With just under 2 minutes remaining in the half Lake led by 10 but it did not feel like it. It felt like a much closer game.  Lake led 28-21 at the half.

In the third quarter with 6:51 remaining in the period, a 3 by Bradley George gave Lake a 10 point lead and it began to feel like Lake might be in control. But Creek's quickness down the court is the best Lake has seen all season and a 10 point lead might as well be a 2 point lead as explosive as Creek is. With 3:06 remaining in the 3rd, a steal and a basket by Chris West made it 41-29. At the end of 3, Lake led 44-33.

In the final quarter with 2 minutes remaining Creek cut the lead to 7, 52-45 and then to 4 with only 25 seconds remaining. Making free throws down the stretch is expected and Lake mostly rose to the challenge. With under 12 seconds remaining a Creek layup made it 56-53. With .5 seconds showing on the clock, two solid free throws by Chris Stenerson, who has ice water in his veins, made the final score 58-53.

Christian West led all scorers with 18; Bradley George contributed 16 and Orion Lewis had 10. Clear Lake went 13 of 18 on free throws (72.2%) while Creek missed 8 free throws in the first 3 periods but made all 8 in the fourth quarter. Creek only hit 3 treys while Lake went 7 of 11 (64%) from outside. Depth off the bench, especially from TJ Gittens and Ryan Lucas, was a definite factor in Clear Lake's win.

As of February 18, 2015, Clear Lake's record is 29-2 (one of the very best records among the state's 6A schools). That is a 93.5% win rate.

Clear Lake is ranked 6th in the Texas state coaches ranking (TABC, 2-9-15). Expect that to change.

February 13, Friday night, Friendswood High School

In the first district game between Clear Lake and Friendswood ever played in the Friendswood gym, Clear Lake defeated Friendswood 53-38. It was an exciting game that was not decided until the last four minutes of the game. Lake led by 2 points at the half and only 4 points starting the fourth quarter. With 3:33 remaining in the game Lake led by only 5 points, 41-36. Lake outscored Friendswood 12-2 in the last 3 1/2 minutes of the contest. Despite poor shooting, Bradley George led all scorers with 17 and Chris Stenerson, who had his best game of the season so far, had 8 or 9 rebounds in the first half, drew one charge (now 17 for the season) and scored 16 points. Chris West contributed 11 for the cause.

As of February 14, 2015, Clear Lake's record is 28-2 (one of the best records among the state's 6A schools). That is 93.3% win rate.

Clear Lake is ranked 6th in the Texas state coaches ranking (TABC, 2-9-15).

Next Tuesday night at Krueger Field House, the District Championship will be decided when Lake takes on Clear Creek. With Creek ranked #3 and Lake ranked #6 in the state, it should be quite a game. Come early if you want a seat. Tickets are being sold in advance Monday and Tuesday at school. Kinda reminds you of the old days when every Lake-Creek game was a sellout.

February 10, Tuesday night, Clear Lake High School

Clear Lake defeated Brazoswood 64-36. Chris West and Alex Westby each had 14 points.  Bradley George knocked down 13 and Chris Stenerson chipped in 10 points.

As of February 7, 2015, Clear Lake's record is 27-2 (one of the best records among the state's 6A schools). That is 93.1% win rate.

February 3, Tuesday night, Krueger Field House

Clear Lake defeated Clear Brook 73-52. Alex Westby led all scorers with 24 points.

As of February 3, 2015 Clear Lake's record is 25-2 (one of the best records among the state's 6A schools). That is 92.6% win rate. FYI: One would have to dig way back in the Clear Lake record books to the 1989-90 Lake team to find a record this good.

Clear Lake is ranked 6th in the state coaches ranking (TABC, 2-2-15).
