Brook 55 at Lake 51

Jan 10, 2017. Clear Brook 55 - Clear Lake 51

The Clear Lake team this season is a very good outside shooting team but you could not tell it Tuesday night when the Falcons fell to the Wolverines in a very close, hard fought battle that thrilled the crowd throughout the game. The Falcons went an abysmal 1 of 21 from 3 point land. Yes, 1 of 21 (4.8%). Talk about inconsistent! This is the same team that hit 15 treys one week ago against Dickinson.

Brook only took 8 three point attempts in the game. They didn't need to because their inside game was so effectve. Lake was mostly unable to stop Brook's drives to the hoop and Lake could not or would not take charges.

Despite the very poor outside shooting, offensively Lake played well enough to keep the game close. At the end of the 3rd quarter it was 41-40 Lake up by 1. So it all came down to the final quarter. With 2:43 remaining in the game and Brook up by 1,  a really bad call put Brook's David Azore at the line for 3 free throws. He sank all three. This put Brook up by 4 and Lake did not recover from it. This gave Brook the game. The referee, who was directly behind the shooter, got suckered into making the call when Azore fell down after his trey attempt. The ref appeared to claim verticality in his explanation to Lake's Coach Penders but being directly behind the shooter is the worst position to judge verticality. The video clearly shows the shooter was not fouled and the shooter's verticality was not impinged upon until after he fell and partially tripped the Lake defender. Just a horrible call.

Lake hit 10 of 13 free throws. Brook shot 13 in the 4th quarter alone hitting 15 of 27 free throws in the game.

Brook's David Azore (#22) who averages 25 ppg was held to 17 points. Lake's Ajare Sanni led all scorers with 24 and Shae Suiaunoa had 11.  Brook's Kendrick Christian (#5) who averages 6.5ppg pumped in 15.

Lake is now 15-7, 2-2.

Two of the referees in this game did not appear to be up for the task. They should never be allowed back in the Clear Lake gym. One of the referees has noticeable potential and is going to be good. These two really good teams deserved better officials. The problem is because our district is so tough this season, many of the games are going to get officials who are not considered among the better ones and the officiating will not seem acceptable.

 Jan 3, 2017. Dickinson 87 - Clear Lake 83

In a hard fought battle Tuesday evening in Krueger Field House the Dickinson Gators showed why they are regarded as the team to beat in District 24-6A as they left their mark on a determined Clear Lake squad. Their mark, #3 freshmanTramon Mark, scored 32 points with superb shooting from the field. In fact, both teams shot the ball exceptionally well. Lake connected on 15 of 26 treys (57.7%) to dazzle the crowd. Dickinson's dominance on the boards made the difference in the game.

Scoring for Lake: Ajare Sanni 29, Zaid Harris 19, Shae Suiaunoa 11, Riley Abercrombie 10

Clear Lake is now 14-6. Lake travels to Clear Falls Friday night.
