Game 5: Clear Lake bests a scrappy Marshall team 68-55

For fans who enjoy good team basketball, the game between Clear Lake and their host Marshall had a lot to offer. This game was a see-saw contest that saw the lead change multiple times. The outcome of the game was not evident until about 4 1/2 minutes remained on the clock in the fourth quarter and even then, the game remained close.

Lake was again without their leading scorer Ajare Sanni, who continues to allow his body to repair itself from the tendonitis he has suffered from for quite a while. Despite Ajare's absence, a well rounded Lake team put on a display of team basketball that made for a fun evening.  Returning from football to join the team were juniors Shae Suiaunoa, Rian Davis, and newcomer Quinton Williams. Although none saw action in tonight's contest, it is good to have the full roster in place going in to December.

Lake's team now has six players averaging double figures in scoring. Riley Abercrombie showed what he is capable of by scoring 21 and hauling in several rebounds. Jeremiah Maldonado led his team with 23 points. After a lengthy absence due to injuries, Jere reminded us why we have missed him so much. Jamail Pink, Zaid Harris, and Casey Davis executed the offense with a precision that make some viewers think it was halfway through the season rather than only at game 5. When this team gets better, we will surprise a lot of folks in the region.

Any time you come to play Fort Bend Marshall you can expect a really good opponent who will beat you most of the time. Marshall is ranked #21 in the state in 5A in preseason rankings by TABC. Coach Gary Nichols always fields a solid team. But there was something different about this Marshall team. Gary Nichols was missing. Coach Nichols has retired and handed over the reins to James Bailey, a veteran coach who has coached on the college level. We wish Coach Bailey continued success as he molds his team into the champions they often become.

The Buffalos were led by senior Terrell Wilson who led all scorers with 27 points.

FYI: For the first time since starting the Lake-Marshall games well over a decade ago, the Clear Lakes teams swept Tuesday night (every Lake team won for the first time). Way to Go Lake!

Lake is now 4-1 for the season.

Game 3 - Lake defeats Dobie 75-60

Game 3: Clear Lake over Dobie 75-60.

Not a particularly exciting game. Lake led early on and maintained their lead throughout the game. Lake was up 15 at the half.

Lake played without their leading scorer, Ajare Sanni, who was out due to tendonitis. Here's hoping Sanni will get better soon.

Game 2: Lamar over Clear Lake 83-73

On the anniversary of the dedication of Krueger Field House (11 years ago), the Falcons traveled to Houston Lamar to do battle with their HISD opponents in the old, dimly lit, crowded Lamar gym. This game was an extremely fast paced, intense basketball game characteristic of the rivalry between these two teams. With the exception of some sub-par officiating at times, this was an exciting game to watch.

Lamar's premier guard, Tamir Bynum, racked up 44 points against the noticeably good, but inadequate defense of Clear Lake. This will go down as one of the greatest offensive performances against a Lake team. There have been only a handful of opponents who have scored over 40 on Lake. Thomas Walkup from Deer Park and Alvin Franklin come to mind. In case you are wondering - the highest score achieved by a Lake opponent was Artie Griffin (San Antonio Lee High School),  who scored 52 points on Lake in a San Antonio tournament in 1990.

Speaking of records. Lake might have set a record for the number of missed shots from within 2 feet of the basket in this game.

Combining Tamir's output with the impressive athleticism of #3, Myles Burns, who racked in 18 pts, it was just too much for the Falcons to handle at times. For the math geeks in the crowd, yes two players did 75% of the scoring for Lamar.

Clear Lake will face very few opponents this season who can withstand the intensity of a game like this Lamar game.

Game 1:

Clear Lake took it to a talented Houston Christian team 79-65 at the Aldine Campbell Center Saturday afternoon. Houston Christian was ranked #3 TAPPS in preseason. In what was the most impressive season opener for Lake since the arrival of Coach Penders in 2009, the Falcons put on a balanced display of talent and teamwork to dominate their opponents. After a series of miscues in the initial minutes of the game, Lake was up by 1, 15-14 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring their opponents by 14 points in the first 3 minutes of the second period. Against a very good basketball team, Lake was up by 20 at the half and led by as much as 23 in the second half before calling off the dogs with over 5 minutes remaining.

If we can keep injuries to a minimum, this is going to be a very special season.

Season Game 4: Clear Lake over Deer Park 66-64

In the first home game of the 2017-18 season Clear Lake hosted our neighbors from Deer Park in a close match-up that went right to the wire. Both these teams were well prepared and ready. Deer Park's head coach Darren Chandler, former Clear Falls head coach, fielded a disciplined, well-rounded squad with four starters returning this year.  Although the lead changed multiple times throughout the game it never really felt like Lake was not in control even when the Falcons were trailing.

Both teams shot the ball very well. Scoring for Lake was very balanced. Ajare Sanni was again out due to tendonitis but junior Casey Davis, with 19 points, stepped up to help Lake prevail. Davis again amazed the crowd with 70% shooting from the field (5 treys). Newcomer Jamail Pink also had 19 very timely points (Jamail also shot 70% from the field). Zaid Harris chipped in 14 (71% from the field). The largest lead of the game was 8 points I believe.

It is early in the season but Lake players could learn a thing or two about how to play in the paint from their Deer Park rivals.
