Day 2 of the Pasadena Tourney

Posted by Donald Wilkerson on Nov 20 2003 at 04:00PM PST
Game 1 Friday morning Clear Lake's varsity bested the Laporte Bulldogs by a score of 64-50. Connor Atchley led all scorers with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Dennis Cerny had 9. Remaining scoring was evenly distributed. Turnovers continued to plague the Falcons (18 turnovers). Dan Rieke sustained an injury to his right ankle early in the game and was forced to watch from the sideline on crutches. Just when the Falcons had the tempo of the game where it seemed to feel right, Rieke's removal from the game seemed to interrupt the offensive flow of the game and the Falcons never quite regained it but the aggression of their defense and good solid performance from the reserves led them to victory. Rieke's injury is expected to sideline him for 12 to 14 days. Game 2 The Falcons second game Friday against Alief Taylor at 6 p.m. at the Phillips Field House displayed the skills of two potentially very good basketball teams but not the maturity of the Falcons as the Alief Taylor Lions beat the Falcons in overtime 53-49. The Falcons led at the half by 4 and it was tied at 49 at the end of regulation play. Turnovers(22) and poor free throw shooting (3 of 8) combined with some inexperienced officiating cost the Falcons their first loss. The Lions were 19 of 23 from the free throw line with 6'7" junior Martellus Bennett pouring in 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. The Falcons play Hastings Saturday morning at Pasadena Memorial at 9 a.m. Their second game will be either at 1:30 p.m. or at 3 p.m.
