The Berlin Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Wrestling Program has the most boys and girls registered in the history of the program. This year’s program started at the end of November and has 54 participants meeting twice a week. The program is open to any boy or girls in grades 1st through 7th who live in Berlin. The older and returning wrestlers meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings while the younger (1st through 4th graders) meet on Tuesday and Friday evenings in the Berlin High School Wrestling Room. Head coach Roger Moss begins his fourth year with the program and is joined by Carl Dombrowik and Alan Bisson as assistant coaches. Also assisting with the program is Tim Sullivan, Kait Moss, David Asal and Ron Marchetti. Coach Moss said, “We have a great bunch of kids who are working hard and learning how to wrestle.” This year the advanced wrestlers hope to enter more weekend wrestling tournaments. Coach Moss added, “These tournaments give the wrestlers a chance to show what they have learned. In the past only a few have taken advantage of these tournaments.” At last year’s CT Kids State Tournament held in Milford, CT, three minutemen entered the meet and all finished in 4th place in their age and weight class. They were Ryan Bisson, Kevin Moss and Jack Rudy. The Minutemen open their season Friday, December 14 at home against Hebron. The match will begin at 6:00 PM in the wrestling room. Anyone is welcome to come to the match and there is no charge to enter the meet. This year’s first year wrestlers include: Patrick Baker, David Balfore, Brendan Butler, DJ Caron, Joseph Colossale, Eric Cote, Matthew Cote, Colin Cunningham, Tyler Cunningham, Ben Domurat, Chris Domurat, Derrick Durity, Jacob Eliades, Robert Hall, Jake Haynes, Jacek Liberda, Ryan Love, Erin McKinnon, Ricky Mullins, Anthony Scacca, Tony Squitieri, Jeffrey Sylvester, Seth Synckowiczs and Austin Vernesoni. Our second year wrestlers include: Ryan Butler, Michael Cassineri, Peter Ginter, John Holzinger, Matthew LeBlanc, James Marchetti, Will Matuszak, Cody McCormack, Tim Norton, Zachary Parsons, Sean Pentalow, Mason Powers, Jack Rudy, Jack Russo, Richie Skwiot, Ali Sullivan, John Swantek, Theo Szmurlo, Chelsea Vujs and Ian Vujs. Our third year wrestlers include: Jonathan Asal, Cameron Banks, Jack Banks, Ryan Bisson, Danny Hackett, Brad Lepak, and Kevin Tatro. If you want to become a great wrestler developing good practice habits is extremely important. Don’t ever kid yourself into believing you can “step-it-up” in a game, and you don’t have to practice hard. The greatest athletes in all sports share a common characteristic…they practice as hard as they play. As you develop through practice, you will find some skills come easier than others. In order to develop into a well-rounded wrestler, approach practice by working especially hard on your weaknesses, while you continue to refine the skills you are strong in.
