The Freshman Pilots lost a close battle to Brother Rice on Saturday, September 25th, losing 16-14. The Freshman Pilots are now 3-2 on the year, 1-1 in the Central Division. Next week's Freshman Football game will be at De La Salle as the Freshmen take on Lutheran North on Saturday, October 2nd at 10 AM. This game is replacing the Harper Woods Notre Dame game which was to be played next week, but since Notre Dame does not have a freshman team, a replacement was found. Good Luck Freshman Pilots!
The Pilots took one on the chin Friday night, this time to a talented Brother Rice team, 17-0. The scoring started in the first quarter when Brother Rice kicker Jon Rea split the uprights on a 45 yard field goal. After the Pilots were forced to punt, Brother Rice was held by the De La Salle defense, but the Warriors got the ball right back when Dave Bemis fumbled the punt return and the Warriors recovered at the DLS 23 yard line. Three plays later, Rice QB Mike Capetto hit senior Charley Henneghan on a 23 yard pass for a Brother Rice touchdown and a 10-0 Brother Rice lead. The Pilots drove down to the Brother Rice 20 yard line, but a 37 yard field goal attempt by Shane Torzy was wide right. Again Rice was held on their next drive, but another fumble gave Brother Rice the ball on the DLS 36 yard line. On the first play of the drive, Capetto threw another touchdown, this time to the tight end Charlie Gantt to give Brother Rice a 17-0 lead at halftime. The second half saw both teams cough up the ball, but neither team being able to do too much with it. With the Pilot offense struggling, the defense had help win the game, but in the end, it was too much Brother Rice for the Pilots to handle as they lose another game to Brother Rice. So, De La Salle is now 2-3 on the year, 1-1 in the Central Division. The next game for De La Salle will be on Friday, October 1st against Harper Woods Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Game time will be 7:30 PM. Come on out Friday night and root the Pilots onto victory. So until Friday, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
On Monday, September 20th, the JV Football team completed the Cubbie sweep, beating U of D Jesuit 12-3 at De La Salle High School. With the score 3-0 at the half, the Pilots scored two touchdowns in the second half, one on a Anthony Sabatella one yard run and another on a Chris Verbic touchdown pass to Shawn Peklo. The De La Salle defense did the rest, holding U of D scoreless in the second half and allowing the JV team to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1996. Great job JV Pilots! The JV's next game will be next week, September 27th against Brother Rice at Brother Rice. Game time will be 4 PM. On Saturday, September 18th, the Freshmen Pilots improved to 3-1 with a 35-14 win over the Cubbies at De La Salle. The freshman team were in control the entire way, leading 21-0 midway through the second quarter and 28-7 at the half. After a U of D touchdown late in the third quarter, the two teams were stalemated until freshman Mike Cuddeback scored on a 36 yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter to seal the game for the Freshmen Pilots. The Freshmen play their next game on Saturday, September 25th at Brother Rice. Game time is 10 AM. And as most people know, this Friday, September 24th is the Varsity Pilots football game against Brother Rice. Game time is 7 PM. So until Friday, Good Luck and Go Pilots!!!
A re-energized De La Salle Pilot defense, along with a ball-control offense shot down the U of D Cubs Saturday night 17-7. The Pilots were able to move the ball with relative ease in the first half, having to punt just once, while allowing just one U of D first down in the entire half. While the Pilots did have success moving the ball, they were not able to put points on the board until 7:08 left in the second quarter when Danny Kosho rushed in from 3 yards out to give De La Salle a 7-0 lead. The Pilots had another chance to add to their lead, but Cecil St. Pierre was intercepted at the U of D 15 yard line to end the drive. In the second half, more of the same. U of D could not move the ball, while the Pilots were able to move the ball, but without any points added on the board. In the fourth quarter, the Pilots, on a 12 play drive, drove from their 29 yard line to the U of D 5 yard, where the drive ended with a Jon DeHondt 21 yard field goal to put De La Salle up 10-0 with 3:38 left in the game. With just under 2 minutes left in the game, Jake Jakubek intercepted a U of D pass at the DLS 36 yard line and brought it all the way back to the U of D 10 yard line before getting tackled. Two plays later, Danny Kosho carried the ball to the goal line where the ball was stripped, but senior John LaRocca, quick on his feet, recovered the ball in the endzone, adding to the DLS lead, and after the extra point, made it a 17-0 De La Salle lead. U of D drove down the field and scored on a 5 yard pass to tight end Connor Barwin with 33 seconds left in the game, but it was too late for the Cubs as they lost to the Pilots for the second year in a row, this time 17-7. For the Pilots, they are now 2-2, 1-0 in the Central Division, with nemesis Brother Rice coming for a visit to the Warren Community Center this Friday, September 24th at 7:00 PM. As many know, Brother Rice defeated Catholic Central this past weekend 14-10 and are 4-0 this season. This is a huge game for both teams, so please come on out and root on your Pilots.
