Posted by Atif Lodhi on Sep 15 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
Officially on their "Revenge Tour - 2006", the Pilots avenged last year 35-28 loss to U of D Jesuit Friday night, defeating the Cubs 20-10 at Ford Field. De La Salle now improves to 4-0 and 1-0 in the Catholic League Central Division. The game started with De La Salle establishing their running game, while shutting down U of D's potent attack. On De La Salle's first drive, DLS drove 28 yards on just two plays, but a botched pitch ruined a promising first drive and forced DLS to play defense. The Pilots forced the Cubs to go 3 and out, getting the ball back for the rest of the first quarter, but it ended 0-0 after one quarter. In the second quarter, starts up with the ball at the UD 46 yard line, but go no where and are forced to punt. UD takes advantage of its defensive stand, going from their 10 yard line to the DLS 6 yard line in 8 plays, but Cubs were unable to sniff the endzone and settled for a 23 yard field goal to draw first blood. The PIlots responded quickly; After receiving the kickoff and starting their drive at the DLS 30 yard line, it took the Pilots only 2 plays to score as senior Jimmy Berezik scored from 66 yards out to give the Pilots the lead 6-3 after the missed extra point. After again holding U of D to only 18 yards in 6 plays, DLS got the ball with 3 minutes left in the second quarter at the DLS 38 yard line. In 9 plays, DLS drove down to the UD 28 yard line before time ran out on the first half, leaving the Pilots ahead 6-3. In the third quarter, De La Salle received the ball first and took advantage of the possession, going 68 yards on 4 plays, capped off by a Chad O'Shell 16 yard run to put DLS ahead 13-3. After again holding U of D to a 3 and out on their next possession, the Pilots got the ball back at their own 46 yard line. On the first play, Jimmy Berezik took the hand off and raced 54 yards to the U of D endzone, putting DLS on top now 20-3. U of D did come back, going 80 yards on 8 plays, highlighted by 4 pass plays that went a combined 73 yards. The drive was capped off by a 3 yard run by U of D quarterback Robert Gardner, cutting the DLS lead to 20-10. But it was the closest U of D got, as DLS played ball-control football for the rest of the game and held U of D to just 39 yards the rest of the game, highlighted by interceptions by senior Don Fowler and sophomore Jimmy Martinez and giving DLS its first 4-0 start since 2003. Now the Pilots take on Catholic Central on Sunday, September 24th at 1:00 PM at Catholic Central High School in the 62nd Annual Boys Bowl - Catholic Central's homecoming game. A map to CC can be found under "Locations" on the left side of the website. So until next week, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!! News and Notes: With the win, DLS starts off 4-0 for the third time since 1994...This week's rushing effort comes in at 321 combined yards, good enough for 2nd all-time in school history...Jimmy Berezik's 236 yard effort was the most yards gained by a DLS running back since Troy Doane gained a school record 298 yards against Ortonville Brandon in 2003...In the pass catching department, Don Fowler led the receving corps with 2 catches for 19 yards...DLS is now 28-13-2 all time versus U of D Jesuit...the combined effort of Jimmy Berezik and Chad O'Shell for 282 yards places it behind other notable dual efforts as as Allen Jefferson and Eric Ford rushing for a total of 314 yards against Brother Rice in 1985...Next week will be the second time DLS has been Catholic Central's opponent for its Boys Bowl game - the first was in 1999 when CC beat DLS 17-13.
