It was the start of another De La Salle football season, the 79th edition, this past Friday night at the Warren Community Center against Detroit Pershing and the Pilots kicked off the season in style with a 35-8 pasting of the Doughboys. De La Salle started the scoring early and often in the first half, scoring on each of their four drives in the first half, with senior fullback Jimmy Berezik leading the charge on three of those touchdown drives, with runs of 9, 1, and 4 yards respectively. De La Salle's other touchdown of the first half came on a one yard sneak by senior quarterback Brian Lewis. De La Salle did have a chance to increase their lead at the end of the half, but Shane Torzy's 34 yard field goal attempt came up short and wide. In the second half, the De La Salle offense picked up where it left off in the first half, scoring on their first possession of the second half when QB Brian Lewis found fullback Anthony Sabatella on 3rd and goal for an 8 yard touchdown pass and give the Pilots a comfortable 35-0 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. Pershing finally got on the board midway through the 4th quarter when Pershing backup quarterback Melvin Taylor connected with Charles Brooks for a 68 yard touchdown pass, but it was too little, too late for the Doughboys as the Pilots defeated Pershing for the 3rd time in 4 years.
