Pilots Beat Sandwich In A Sloppy Game

In a game filled with penalties and turnovers for both teams, De La Salle found a way to get it done again Friday night, this time 35-7 over Windsor Sandwich. DLS is now 3-0 on the year. DLS started the game kicking off to Sandwich and after forcing the Sabres to go three and out, DLS started their first drive on the Sandwich 44 yard line. It only took the Pilots four plays to score as senior quarterback Brian Lewis found junior WR David Blackburn for the 30 yard touchdown to put the Pilots on top early 6-0. But that was all the scoring the Pilots would do in the first quarter as penalties and mistakes thwarted two other DLS first quarter drives. In the second quarter, DLS got two gift points when the Sandwich punter took a knee in the endzone for a safety, putting the Pilots up 8-0. Again, missed opportunities and mistakes were on the forefront in the second quarter as two teams combined for five penalties, two fumbles, a missed field goal, and a blocked punt. DLS did score again before the end of the first half as the team went into its two-minute offense and completed a 9 play, 54 yard drive with a touchdown pass to Shane Torzy with 12 seconds left in the first half and to give the Pilots a 15-0 lead. De La Salle got the ball first in the third quarter and made good use of their first second half drive, going 80 yards in 5 plays, culminated in Shane Torzy's 44 yard run to put the Pilots up 21-0. Sandwich though did make it interesting as Nathan Riva returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7, but that was all the Sabres could muster in terms of points. After forcing DLS to punt, Sandwich got the ball back at their own 7 yard line, but on the second play of their drive, sophomore Jimmy Martinez intercepted a deflected ball and returned it 30 yards for the touchdown, giving DLS a 28-7 lead. The final points were added in the fourth quarter when junior Chad O'Shell took the pitch from quarterback Brian Lewis and raced 77 yards to the endzone, ending the scoring and giving the Pilots the final margin of victory. DLS is now 3-0 on the year and will take on U of D Jesuit on Friday, September 15th at Ford Field at 7:00 PM. Be sure to get down to Ford Field early since there will be a Tigers game taking place that night and traffic will be rather heavy going into both venues. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the De La Salle Athletic Office for $7 or at Ford Field for $8. This is the second game of a doubleheader, with the first game being Allen Park Cabrini vs. Riverview Gabriel Richard. A ticket to the DLS game is also valid for entry into the Cabrini/RGR game as well. So until next week, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
