Pilots Clinch Playoff & Prep Bowl Spots
For the second straight year, De La Salle captured both a MHSAA playoff spot and a Prep Bowl spot with a 39-7 win over Divine Child Saturday night at Fitzgerald High School. The win puts DLS at 6-0 on the year, 3-0 in the CHSL Central Division.
The Pilots got rolling early - after Tony Ramirez intercepted a Divine Child pass on the first play of the game, it took the DLS offense just two plays to score on a 13 yard pass from Josh Sinagoga to Kyle Torzy, putting DLS up 6-0, which would be the only scoring in the first quarter after exchanging punts and DLS fumbling the ball through the endzone for a Divine Child touchback.
On their first possession of the second quarter, it took De La Salle three plays to go 72 yards, the last 50 coming on a Chad O'Shell run which put DLS up, after Kyle Torzy's two-point conversion run, 14-0 on the Falcons. But DLS was not done in the first half - after a Jimmy Martinez interception and 20 yard run back to the DC 21 yard line, it took two plays, the last nine on a Chad O'Shell run to put DLS up 20-0 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, more of the same: On De La Salle's first possession on the second half, the Pilot offense went 80 yards in three plays, the final 71 on Chad O'Shell's third touchdown run of the game, putting DLS up 26-0. On Divine Child's first possession of the second half, DC faced a 3rd and 9 from its own 35 yard line, but on the Adam Forester run, David Blackburn forced the fumble and returned it 36 yards to give DLS a 33-0 lead. After another Falcon punt, the DLS offense took over at their own 40 yard line, but it only took the Pilots one play to score, as Andre Dortch took the handoff and raced 60 yards into the endzone, giving DLS a 39-0 lead. Divine Child ended up scoring on a 33 yard pass from Marty Mitchell to Matt McMillan with 2:27 left in the game, but it was too little too late for the Falcons.
Now that a playoff and a Prep Bowl berths have been secured, DLS can now set its sight on a Central Division Championship, but to do that, the Pilot face a tough Brother Rice team that welcomed back its quarterback, Andy Lentz, this past weekend. DLS will play on Saturday, October 6th at Southfield Lathrup High School at 1:00 PM. Get there early as there will be a large crowd on hand for the game. Directions to Southfield Lathrup can be found under 'Locations' on the left side of the website.
So until Saturday, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
