Pilots Lose Heartbreaker, Play Adams In Playoffs
In arguably the biggest heartbreaker game since last year's state final game, the Pilots of De La Salle lost to Catholic Central last Saturday, October 20th, on a last second, 44 yard field goal 10-7. The loss put DLS at 6-3 to end the regular season.
What made this game so difficult was the fact that the DLS defense did a fantastic job of shutting down the CC offense, allowing only 68 total yards for the entire game. The DLS offense played well at times, but when it the offense needed to get that extra yard during the game, often times it fell short.
The scoring started in early in the first quarter as CC capitalized on a DLS fumble, returning it 31 yards to go up 7-0 with 11:43 left in the first quarter. After a few jitters, the DLS offense settled down, scoring on its third possession of the game on a 3 yard run by Kyle Torzy to end a 9 play, 72 yard drive, tying the score at 7. DLS had a chance in the 2nd quarter to go ahead, driving down inside the CC 1 yard line, but failed to punch it in on fourth down, leaving the score tied at 7 going into halftime.
In the second half, more of the same - back and forth between the two teams, but a costly special teams miscue by the Pilots gave CC field position for the second half of the fourth quarter. In the end, the Pilot offense could not muster any more yards and CC took advantage of a short DLS punt with two minutes left in the game, giving the Shamrocks the ball at the DLS 30 yard line. After three plays and four yards, CC lined up for a 44 yard field goal try. After two DLS timeouts to "freeze" the kicker, the Shamrocks lined up and willed the ball and barely clear the uprights, handing the Pilots its third straight loss for the first time since 2005.
But now it's a new season - playoff season and it begins Friday, October 26th against Rochester Adams at Adams. Game time is 7 PM. Adams High School is located on the corner of Adams Road and Tienkien (25 Mile Road). Get there early as its sure to be a highly attended game.
So until Friday, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
