Pilots Eliminate The Norsemen, Win District Title

In a sloppy game in which both teams turned the ball over a combined eight (8) times and three personal foul penalties were called, the Pilots outslugged the Grosse Pointe North Norsemen 28-14 at Warren Fitzgerald to win their first District title since 2002. The Pilots are now 9-2 on the season. The game started off on a sluggish note, with both teams going scoreless in the first quarter and with De La Salle turning the ball over twice in their own territory, but Grosse Pointe North did not do itself any favors either, turning over the ball once on a fake punt pass and a fumble by their starting running back Jerry Peoples. In fact, it was the Peoples fumble at the end of the 2nd quarter that led to De La Salle's first touchdown of the game. After fumbling the ball at their own 26 yard line, Jimmy Berezik took the ball on the Pilots first possession of the second quarter and raced into the endzone, giving DLS the 7-0 lead. North did threaten once during the quarter, driving from the GPN 26 yard line to the DLS 23 in 13 plays, but the drive ended when Don Fowler picked off his third pass of the day on a halfback option pass, leaving the score 7-0 going into halftime. In the second half, more mistakes for both teams. Grosse Pointe North received the ball first in the second half and went 3 and out. On 4th down, Jimmy Martinez raced in and blocked the Michael Dalliare punt and Shane Torzy recoved the punt at the GPN 22 yard line. From there it took the Pilots 5 plays to go 22 yards, capped off by a Jimmy Berezik 1 yard plunge to give DLS a 14-0 lead. But just as at the end of the first quarter a GPN turnover led to a DLS touchdown, this time a DLS turnover towards the end of the third quarter at the DLS 32 yard line led to a Grosse Pointe North touchdown as the Norsemen drove 32 yards on 5 plays, capped off and highlighted by a 20 yard touchdown pass from Mike Stevenson to Cory McCain to give North their first points of the game and cut the DLS lead in half. But from there, the DLS defense stiffened, stopping North on their next two drives with Shane Torzy stopping the second drive by intercepting a GPN pass at the North 25 and returning it to the GPN 9 yard line. Two plays later, Jimmy Berezik took the ball in from 4 yards out, scoring his 3rd touchdown of the day, and giving DLS a 21-7 lead with 3:18 left in the fourth quarter. Grosse Pointe North, now facing a 14 point deficit with 3 minutes left, tried their best to air it out, but to no avail, turning the ball over on downs at their own 22 yard line. From there, it took the Pilots three plays to score, with Chad O'Shell scoring from 8 yards out to put the exclaimation mark on the game. GPN did score again with 1:08 left in the game to get within 14 points at 28-14, but it was too little too late as the Pilots won the District title.
