On a muddy, rain soaked field at Dearborn Heights Crestwood High School, the Pilots of De La Salle defeated Divine Child for the first time since 2003 with a 12-0 win over the Falcons on Saturday afternoon. The win puts DLS at 6-0 for the first time since 1994 and gives the Pilots their first automatic MHSAA playoff berth since 2002 and their first CHSL Prep Bowl berth since 1994. The game started off slow for both teams as struggled to find any sort of rhythm offensively. DLS had its best chance to score midway through the first quarter when the Pilots drove down to the Divine Child 8 yard line, but a holding penalty pushed DLS back and a 30 yard field goal attempt by Shane Torzy was no good. In the second quarter, more of the same. Divine Child had its best scoring chance of the entire day when the Falcons recovered a Jimmy Berezik fumble at the DLS 45 yard line, but got no further than the DLS 41 yard line and was forced to punt. DLS got on the board midway through the 2nd quarter when the Pilots drove 89 yards in 7 plays, aided by an illegal participation penalty by Divine Child, capped by Jimmy Berezik's first touchdown run of the day, a 65 yard run, to put DLS up 6-0 which is how it remained going into halftime. In the second half, moving the ball was a difficult proposition for the Divine Child offense as the DLS defense shut down the Falcon attack. For De La Salle, on its second drive of the second half, DLS went on a 14 play, 94 yard drive, aided by two DC offsides penalties and 33 yard Jimmy Berezik run down to the DC 10 yard line. Two plays later, Berezik plunged in from two yards out to give DLS a 12-0 lead with 11:55 left in the fourth quarter. For the rest of the game, the DLS defense continued to shutdown Divine Child, allowing the Falcons 59 total offensive yards for the entire game. With the win, DLS won its first game over Divine Child since 2003, cliched their first playoff berth since 2003, and cliched their first trip to the Prep Bowl since 1994. Now the real fun begins. De La Salle takes on Brother Rice at the Warren Community Center on October 6th at 7:00 PM. This is game is the Homecoming game for De La Salle and seeing that both teams are defeated, it should be a very competitive game. Come early and root on the Pilots!
