De La Salle Defeats Finney 31-0, On To District Final

Posted by Atif Lodhi on Oct 28 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
Behind Jimmy Berezik's record setting performance and a stifling defense, De La Salle defeated Detroit Finney Saturday night 31-0, allowing De La Salle to advance to next week's district final game against Grosse Pointe North. De La Salle is now 8-2 on the year. The game started off slow, as both teams went scoreless in the first quarter, but the second quarter started off with a bang for the Pilots, first when junior Kyle Torzy blocked a Detroit Finney punt and Anthony Sabatella recovered it in the endzone to give the Pilots, after the PAT, a 7-0 lead. On Finney's next possession, from the Finney 25 yard line, senior Don Fowler intercepted a Highlander pass and took it to the DLS 11 yard line. On the next play, Berezik scored from 11 yards out to give DLS a 13-0 lead. But the Pilots were not finished in the second quarter. Two possessions later, after another blocked punt, this time by Shane Torzy, DLS took over at the Finney 27 yard line. On the first play of the drive, Berezik took the ball and raced 27 yards to pay dirt, giving the Pilots a 19-0 going into halftime. In the second half, more of the same. After freshman Andre Dortch returned the kickoff to the DLS 27 yardline, on the first offensive play of the third quarter, Berezik took the handoff and raced 73 yards to give the Pilots a 25-0 lead. Finney's best drive of the game occurred after DLS took the 25-0 lead, as the Highlanders drove 71 yards in 17 plays, aided by a DLS pass interference call, to the DLS 19 yard line, but on 4th and 14, the Pilots snuffed out the quarterback draw and ended Finney's threat. De La Salle's last scoring drive of the game took place late in the 3rd quarter into the fourth quarter as the Pilots, who recovered a bad snap on a Finney punt, drove 25 yards on 8 plays, highlighted by Berezik's 4th touchdown of the game to give the final margin of victory of 31-0. Now De La Salle will take on Grosse Pointe North on Saturday, November 4th at 1:00 PM at Warren Fitzgerald High School. Please note the day, time, and location. Fitzgerald High School is located on the northeast corner of Ryan Road and 9 Mile. This will still be a DLS home game. So until next week, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
