Pilots Down Shamrocks in Overtime
In front of a capacity crowd at Fitzgerald High School, the De La Salle Pilots battled back from a halftime deficit to defeat Catholic Central Saturday afternoon 21-14 in overtime. The win puts DLS at 5-0 this season, 2-0 in the Catholic League Central Division. This marks the first time since the 1983 and 1984 seasons that DLS has defeated CC in back to back seasons.
This game was a typical Central Division game - tough, hard-hitting, and close from beginning to end. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Pilots struck first, going 51 yards in six plays, highlighted by halfback pass from junior John Martinez to his brother Jimmy Martinez for 38 yards, down to the CC 13 yard line. From there, it took four plays before Chad O'Shell bowled into the endzone from two yards out, giving DLS the 7-0 lead. But Catholic Central responded right back, going 80 yards in 7 plays, ending in a halfback pass, this one from sophomore Anthony Capatina to senior Scott Kovanda from 43 yards out to tie the game up at 7. On the next DLS possession, Chad O'Shell fumbled at the CC 32 yard line and from there, CC went 32 yards in 3 plays, ending in a Ryan Houska pass to Jon Vigi, giving the Shamrocks a 14-7 lead into halftime and stunning the Pilot faithful.
In the second half, the Pilots came out on a mission and did so defensively, holding CC to 35 total yards in the second half and overtime and giving the offense chances to tie the game. The offense finally came through, marching 59 yards in 12 plays, finishing with Chad O'Shell's second touchdown of the day, again from two yards out, but this time on fourth down, to tie the score at 14 a piece. After DLS tied it up, both teams exchanged possessions, with neither team sustaining any sort of drive to get within field goal range. Catholic Central had the last chance in the game to win in regulation, but ran out of time as they entered into DLS territory and sending the game into overtime, the first time DLS had played in an overtime game since 1999.
In overtime, CC won the toss and went on defense first. But it did not matter much, as Chad O'Shell took the pitch and raced 10 yards into the endzone, giving DLS, after the PAT, a 21-14 lead. Now Catholic Central was given its chance, starting at the 15 yard line rather than the 10 yard line because of a running into the kicker penalty, CC had 4 chances to even the score. On first down, Anthony Capatina took the pitch and gained 5 yards down to the 10 yard line. On second down, Ryan Houska went back to pass and threw the ball towards Kam Leiter, but it was nearly picked off by John Martinez. On third down, Houska threw a fade into the endzone intended for Scott Kovanda, but Kovanda dropped the ball. On fourth down, with the DLS crowd on it's feet, Houska fired another pass to Leiter in the end zone, but the pass was behind Leiter and fell harmlessly to the turf, giving DLS the overtime win on Homecoming.
Now the Pilots will take on Divine Child on Saturday, September 29th at 7:30 PM at Fitzgerald High School in another pivotal Central Division game, so come on out and root the Pilots on to victory.
So until next week, Good Luck and GO PILOTS!!!
