MAVERICKS FALL TO TORREY PINES 0-2

San Diego Union Tribune - By John Maffei

"The records just keep falling Joey Magrisi.  The Torrey Pines High senior right-hander turned in perhaps his most-dominant performance of the season on Tuesday, shutting out No. 6 ranked La Costa Canyon on two hits as the No. 2 falcons edged the Mavericks 2-0 to win the Avocado West League baseball title.

The shutout was the sixth in a row for Magrisi, tying the San Diego Section mark set by Point Loma left-hander David Wells in 1982.  Magrisi ran his scoreless streak to 51, after eclipsing Wells' streak of 42 last week.  According to the National Federation, the record for consecutive scoreless innings is 80 by Joey Porter of South Natchez Adams (Miss.) in 1973. Only 14 pitchers nationally have thrown at least 52 consecutive scoreless innings.  "David helped me all summer," said Magrisi, who was injured and didn't pitch last season after going 16-3 in two seasons at Rancho Bernardo. " I hadn't pitched for a year, so he helped clean up my mechanics, fine tune things."  Magrisi said he plans to have Wells - the winner of 239 major league games and the author of a perfect game - sign a game-used ball.

Magrisi struck out 12 and allowed just two singles against LCC. The Mavericks (21-8, 12-3) got only one runner as far as second base. Magrisi retired the last 12 batters he faced, striking out eight.  He is 11-0 on the season for Torrey Pines (25-6, 13-2). In 77 innings, Magrisi has allowed just 36 hits, walked only eight and has 104 strikeouts. His ERA is 0.36.

"I think that's the best game in the streak," said Torrey Pines coach Kirk McCaskill, who won 106 big league games. "The first pitch of the game was a change-up. That set the tone. Joe had a plan and he executed it flawlessly."   Magrisi needed just 82 pitches to hurl his latest gem.   "Honestly, I try not to think about the records," said Magrisi, who is committed to Cal State Fullerton. "Winning the league was the goal today.  Breaking the record, throwing a shutout, makes it that much more awesome."

Falcons Edge Mavericks 2-1

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at May 5, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Torrey Pines broke a tie for first place with the Mavericks on Saturday morning with a 2-1 win in a tight pitcher's duel.

The Falcons pushed across two runs in the top of the 6th on a well placed squeez bunt and a throwing error.   The Mavericks forced across one run in the bottom of the 6th but a Falcon 6-4-3 double play ended the bases loaded rally. The Falcons defense was the difference.

The two teams meet again on Tuesday May 15th at Torrey Pines High School in the regular season finale.  The Mavericks (9-2, 18-7) have three games with Sage Creek (3-8, 13-12) while Torrey Pines (10-1, 22-5) has three games left with Canyon Crest (7-4, 20-8).

Carlsbad (3-8, 9-16) has three upcoming games with San Dieguito Academy (1-10, 10-14).

Falcons Shut Out Mavericks 8 - 0

San Dieguo Union, By John Maffei

Struggling to find his fastball comman, Torrey Pines High senior Joey Magrisi reached deep into his bag of tricks.    What he found was a chang-up, a pitch he used to throw his fourth straight complete-game shutout, beating La Costa Canyon 8-0 to grab a share of the Avocado West League lead Thursday and snap the Mavericks' 12 game winning streak.    "My fastball command was off," said Magrisi, who has committed to play baseball next season at Cal State Fullerton. "I couldn't locate in and out.  "So I had to go up and down. then finally, I got my change-up working."    Despite the score, courtesy of a five-run sixth, No. 5 ranked La Costa Canyon (18-6, 9-1) put the pressure on Magrisi.  He had to work out of two-on, no-out jams in the first, third and fifth innings.   The visiting Mavericks finished with eight hits, the most given up by Magrisi this season.  But he struck out a season-high 12 and walked only one.  Seven of the final nine outs came on strike-outs.

"All you can do is tip your hat to the guy," said LCC coach Justin Machado.  "We put the pressure on him, but in a tight game, we couldn't get the big hit, couldn't make the big play."    Magrisi is now 9-0 this season, lowering his ERA to 0.44. He has given up just 28 hits in 63 innings with seven walks and 81 strikeouts.    He has thrown 37 straight scoreless innings, going back to a first-inning run by Mission Hills on April 2nd.   The San Diego Section record for consecutive score-less innings is 42 by David Wells of Point Loma in 1982.    Cole Hamels of Rancho Bernardo went 35 1/3 score-less in 2002.   While Magrisi stressed he got strong support from his defense, LCC struggled in the field, dropping two fly balls and a popup, leading to six runs for No. 2 Torrey Pines (21-5, 9-1).

Magrisi's ground ball out drove in the Falcons' first run after a dropped fly ball.  He homered in the sixth - his seventh of the season - after a misplayed pop foul.   "Joey really helped himself at the plate," said Torrey Pines coach Kirk McCaskill.  "But he has been doing that and pitching like that all season."  The teams play again Saturday at 10:30 am at LCC, then meet May 15th in the final regular season game of the season at Torrey Pines.           joh.maffei@sduniontribune.com
