The baseball game didn't start exactly how Ross Goldschlag had planned.  Pitching in relief of La Costa Canyon starter Spencer Jones, Goldschlag gave up a bases-loaded triple to the first batter he faced.  Then, in hs first complete inning, he was tagged for three more runs. But the junior right-hander settled in, holding host Rancho Bernardo scoreless over the next 3 2/3 innings as the seventh seeded Mavericks hung on to win 13-9 in an Open Division slugfest on Elimination Saturday.

LCC (23-9) advances to play at Torrey Pines on Tuesday May 29th and must beat the Falcons twice to advance to the championship. Torrey Pines needs just one win to play for a CIF Open Division Title.  Rancho Bernardo, the 4th seed, finished 25-8.

"It was a matter of settling in and finding my off-speed stuff," Goldschlag said. "I've been pitching in relief of Spencer. I have his back.  We knew we were in a dogfight, so I tried to relax in between innings, playing Missy Elliott songs in my head."

LCC totaled 13 hits, including home runs by Chris Neveau and Brady Lavold, along with four walks and two batters being hit by pitches.  Catcher Carter Cooperman drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and later had an RBI double.  "The best thing for a catcher is to be in sync with his pitcher."  Cooperman said. "I put down the sign, and Ross attacked the strike zone.  It was a privilege to set up and catch him. The four RBI's were a bonus."

RB had eight hits, including a home run by Miles Cook, drew six walks and had a batter hit by a pitch.  But the Broncos stranded six runners in scoring position. Every starter but one reached base at least once, and 12 players reached at least twice.

" I've been in a million  LCC-RB games, and I've never seen one like that," LCC coach Machado said. "You usually don't come out on the winning end of a slugest with RB."

La Costa Canyon rebounded to knock out Avocado East League champion San Marcos 6-2.  On Saturday 5-26 at 11:00 am the Mavericks travel to Rancho Bernardo to play the Palomar League Champion in the Third Round of the CIF Open Division.  The Mavericks have played in the Open Division of the CIF Playoffs every year since it was created and you expect to play League Champs.

Torrey Pines, the Avocado West League champ, edged the Mavericks 4-3 in the first round and then clipped Rancho Bernardo 6-3 in the second round match up.

Poway defeated Cathedral Catholic 8-3; and Eastlake shut out Helix 5-0.

San Diego Union-Tribune - By John Maffei:

The Streak Is Over.  Torrey Pines senior right-hander Joey Magrisi had his record-setting streak of scoreless innings snapped at 54 2/3.  So he won Wenesday's Open Division first-round playoff game with his bat, clubbing a two-out, two strike, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Falons to a dramatic 4-3 baseball win over La Costa Canyon.   With the victory, No. 2-seeded Torrey Pines (26-6) stays in the winner's bracket and hosts No. 3 Rancho Bernardo on Friday.  La Costa Canyon (21-9), seeded No. 7, drops into the loser's bracket and plays at No. 6 San Marcos on Friday.

"Obviously, I knew the situation," Magrisi said of his seventh-inning at-bat. "I knew what was at stake.  "I tried to stay calm. Put everything that had happened before in the game out of my mind.  "I just wanted to get a base hit, keep the line moving."  Instead, Magrisi smoked a curveball over the fence in deepest left-centerfield, driving in Max Isaacman, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Six of Magrisi's eight home runs this year have come on curves.  "It felt really nice to pick up myself and my teammates," Magrisi said.

This was the fourth meeting between Avocado West League rivals LCC and Torrey Pines. Magrisi had thrown back-to-back shutouts against the Mavericks, allowing just seven hits with one walk and 23 strikeouts in racking up 14 of his 51 consecutive scoreless innings.  He blanked LCC for the first three innings Wednesday before the Mavericks finally broke through in the fourth with Garrett Bevacqua's double driving in Spencer Jones.  Magrisi was done on the mound after six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.  He struck out 12 and had one intentional walk.  "Honestly, I was a little shaky on the mound," said Magrisi, who is headed to Cal State Fullerton. "Now the streak is over. I'm not relieved it's over, but I don't have to worry about it, either."

For most of the game LCC's Keaton Carattini, who is Michigan bound, had Torrey Pines tied in knots, striking out nine before Magrisi's game winner.  "What a tough way to lose," said LCC coach Justin Machado. " I'm so proud of my guys. They played their butts off. We were more aggressive today (stealing four bases). But that's because we finally had guys on base."

Magrisi has worked 76 innings this season with just eight walks and 105 strikeouts. "Joey is the greatest high school competitor I've ever seen," said Torrey Pines coach Kirk McCaskill. "He's what high school baseball is all about. Carattini was fantastic.  We were lucky to scratch anything out against him. But we had an ace in the hole in Joey."
